Is it just me, or have you guys noticed in your areas the increasing amount of ads for problem horses? All of a sudden recently, a bunch of ads have been popping up on Craigslist of horses for sale for 200-500 dollars that have been badly abused, neglected, or just not handled at all? Wonder why the spike in sale of these horses and the honesty all of a sudden. I have never seen so many ads before for horses that need experienced handlers and lots of work. Wonder why? I wish I had the time and money to take them all in, put some training on them and find loving homes!! We can dream =] Some of you may have read my last post, but my mare died a few weeks ago. I am actually going to look at a "problem horse" on Sunday =] She's a year and a half old filly, sold as grade, and she's as thin as a rail...supposedly she's halter broke, but we shall see! Hopefully I can help turn her life around, if things work out!

Honestly I think it has to do with the banning of slaughter and shipping of horses in the US. Also the rescues due a **** good job at shaming anyone who even considers taking a canner to the sale. These horses that are flooding the market are the ones that used to run through your weekly livestock sale barns and head for the truck. When the slaughter line was still available, people could get upwards of $700-$900 for their nag, as long as it was fleshy. Now a good fat horse brings about $300, With the stigma attached, the fear of being harassed by Debbie Do-Goodder and the fall out of the market, they would rather leave those horses in the back yard and feed them just enough to get by, or not feed them at all than deal with the sale yard. The behavioral issues have the same story. The owners are over their heads, don't have the knowledge, the resources or the time they thought they did and just want out.

I have been seeing several of these types of horses as well and a lot of them, especially the outlaw type, usually are said to have been rescued from a "bad home" and the owner doesn't have the time to invest any more.

I think a lot of it is with riding season coming (at least for us in the cold states) no one is wanting to deal wiht a problem this time of year. Sorry to hear you lost your horse, hope this one will work out for you.

Very intuitive! I know what you meant too about Craigslist being a sad place to look at horses...definitely not a heartwarming place to find one!

Not to mention adults. My next door neighbors have turned into the people from Deliverance. Sad, they are about 45 and act like the are in middle school. Horrible. So upsetting I just really cannot post the details.

I have the worst students in the Marshall High School and they have more respect for me than the people from Deliverance. My students love me because I treat them like adults and hold them accountable. Funny thing, the ones who appreciate me the most are the Hispanics.
