| I got a weanling last fall from a ranch in NE. Now that he's starting to shed, i noticed a little bump and discovered a tick. Upon further investigation I found Hundreds, no exaggeration!! Everywhere, his belly, legs, chest, neck, back, tail, head. Every species of tick, big, small. His skin is solid lumps, all ticks! Poor guy, he's always looked wormy despite two power pack wormers and good nutrition. This is probably why!! He's had the super long baby hair all winter and I haven't noticed! Other than picking them all off my hand what can I do to kill these suckers? They haven't spread to my other horses, and in the past 10 years I've maybe found one tick on a horse ever. Help please!! |

Ditto, my vet gave my horse a shot of ivermectin , don't know if paste is just as effective. |

Dont want them escping alive and you sure as heck dont want them on you. Trust me lymes desease is nothing to mess with. It can ruin your life and even take your life. Lets not forget thats what also took Ed Wright.

| My fiancΓ© and his brother have used sevin dust in the past with cases like these. He says dust it on him and brush it through brush ticks off the next day. You'll have to handle any on his head some other way - I've also seen people say Vaseline? |

Location: Oklahoma & Texas | Ivermec will kill them if you give cattle version by weight in their mouth not injected just squirt in mouth and will work like within 24 hours a vet could give you a dose of its just one horse so you don't have to buy a bottle |

Just speculation but this looks the most sensible. Better to keep the chemicals outside the bloodstream. I remember watching a nature show and seeing a young giraffe covered with ticks. He died. Not much you can do on the African plains. Makes you realize what these poor unattended animals go through.
I would ask for a vet's advice too. |

| Bug Block from Absorbine (Purple botttle), will knock them off. Soak him down with it. Problem solved. |

| My filly came from SD with them. I wormed her with Ivermectin and the used fly spray that said it killed ticks on the bottle as well as Equi-Spot. The Equi-Spot is like Frontline for dogs only for horses. We've pretty much knocked them out I think. It was horrendous there for awhile. The fly spray mainly just made them come to the surface where you could pick them off. I don't really think it killed them. I still find a couple here and there where treatment was missed, mainly on her belly. |

| My filly was also COVERED. There wasn't a square inch that there wasn't a tick. The previous owner said it was quite common up there on the ranch and usually they'd fall out when the horse sheds.
I wasn't convinved, so I treated. Treatment above is what vet recommended. |

I use this all year round. Kills ticks, they fall right off. Its located in the cattle section at my local feed stores, but it is safe for equines.

| I realized I have't wormed him with Ivermectin yet, so that will be my first step. I'll also get some fly spray or Equispot to treat them directly! Thanks so much for all the suggestions! |

You may want to think about giving him an electrolyte or something to help pick him up and make him drink. I'm sure those ticks have made him feel like poo. Poor thing. Keep us updated! |

Yes, Vaseline would be hard when he's covered with them as you put vaseline on the tick to smother and suffocate them until they just fall off. It works really well though for me. |

was suggesting for the head and other sensitive areas you may not want to use sevin on. It'd be messy. I'd maybe try soaking a cloth in one of the mentioned sprays and trying that before Vaseline. |

This. It is safe and fast. Here in WY we deal with this every spring. They are nasty little buggers. |
