| I have a 16 year old cow bred gelding who still has the heart and try, I just feel that he could run a lot faster and put more into it if he were feeling better. I have tried Adequan and Pentosan, and think that they helped him to some extent but neither seem to have lasting effects. A few days before a race, the day of, and day after, he gets previcox. I ran him a week ago today and he balked at the gate and that is a red flag with him that he is sore. I have been told by 2 different vets that he most likely has arthritis in his hocks. Last summer, I had his hocks "flexed" and he scored a 2 in one, and a 3 in the other ,this is when we tried Adequan. I plan on having him vetted in the next few weeks and also get radiographs of his hocks. If and when you inject, what do you have your vet inject into the joint? And with hocks, it is 2 injections each hock? Thanks in advance. |

| 2 injections in each hock. In my experience a 2/3 grade lameness for the hocks needs more than previcox and adequan. Giving adequan or pentosan will lengthen the time you get from injections. I would not run him till he is treated. |

Get x-rays of his hocks. Also do a full lameness exam looking at the entire body, not just the hocks.
Something is wrong and he's trying to tell you (balking at the gate).
If nothing else is found except soreness in the hocks, then I would absolutely inject.

Location: Durango CO | A sore lower back, sore front feet, running past barrels and needing harder cue to rate and turn, and bowing off 3rd barrel were my mares signs. She wld not trot because looking was more comfortable. Mine hesitated in the alley also. Diving on their front end to turn is another sign. I was told to inject and give an injectible because it helps the injections last longer and that's what o do for my oldie. |

| Okay thank you, I was wondering what medication everyone uses as the actual joint injection? And this was our first run since July so I am not planning to run him again until after we see the vet. Also, he turns really well I just feel that he can fire a lot harder if he was feeling better. |

Location: Lost in the corn of Iowa. | I knew it was time to inject my 17 yr old mare when last year she started to dump on the front end in her turns, wouldn't finish 2nd no matter how much I reinforced being snappy in turns, she started balking at the gate and diving into the barrel. She is an honest runner normally. At our last show in October of last year I gave her a little bute to help rule out pain or an attitude issue, she ran 100 times better on bute so that was the definite answer that it was time to inject for me. Just had her injected last friday and she tested positive on a lameness exam in both hocks and had narrowing of the joint space on the x rays. So we went ahead and injected, plus I do a monthly injectable that is supposed to help extent the life of my injections. |

| You don't always have to do upper AND lower joints of the hocks. My vet started with lowers and for most horses that was plenty. Vet injected 2 types of steroids a long and short acting one PLUS antibiotic. You CAN inject HA BUT for the age of that horse I wouldn't have that done but its up to you and your vet. |

Location: Florida.. | its time.. your horse will thank you
also if fusing and arthritis.. adequan wont help alone.. its more for being proactive before the issues arise or to make injections last longer.. imo.. |
