Location: Oklahoma | I have a very ulcer prone horse- we have treated for the ulcers and have been feeding renew gold (1.5 # per day) and the alfafa pellets (6 lbs per day) I feed twice daily. Plus he gets smart paks Gleam and Gain and another one I can't remember right now. He's been on this for about 5 weeks. He's losing weight. I feel like I need to add something else.
He loves the mix. But hes a hard keeper. I don't want to go back to grain because of the uclers. But need to do something else or I will have to. Hes had his teeth done (about 2 months ago), his shots, full exam- and hes doing great otherwise.
So any suggestions? |

| If he was mine I'd add oil, rice bran, and black oil sunflower seeds, and up the alfalfa pellets to 4 lbs twice daily and the renew gold to a lb each feeding.
How's your hay? Is he on free choice? Any chance you can add alfalfa?

Location: Oklahoma | I have added just the last week 1# each feeding on the renew Gold. We live in Oklahoma and with the blister beatles no one around here takes a chance on alfafa hay.
I was thinking about adding the Healthy Coat oil- but I don't really know anything about any of other type oils? I mainly get my stuff from tractor supply.
And he is on free choice hay all day. Big round bale and I also throw 3-6 flakes out daily of good prarie grass sqaure bale

Location: Oklahoma | Thanks for the replies. I will def up his pellets tonight! I was also wondering what about adding whole or rolled oats? Will that help and/or affect the ulcers? |

Renew gold doens't have the caloric content needed for wieght gain by itself. |

Location: Deep South | I agree with increasing his alfalfa. 6 pounds is not very much at all.
My feed program is similar to yours. 1lb of rice bran am/pm and a vitamin/mineral supplement. Plus 24/7 turnout on good pasture. My horses eat 2 flakes of alfalfa each am and pm. Weighed it equals 15-20 pounds per day per horse. |

This ^and I would switch to a quality cube if you don't want to feed baled alfalfa. Cubes are more like forage than a pellet.
I have my first "hard keeper" he came to be pretty thin. He gets 2 cups RG am/pm, 1/2 scoop of oats and all the alfalfa he will eat-which is not much unless he is up overnight-he does not eat it just because it is in front of him. I also have plenty of good grazing which I think has helped him the most. He now looks great. |

Location: Oklahoma | Appreicate the response.. he's not kept in a stall unless bad weather. I didn't realize that about the Renew Gold on the calorie content! Ok I will def up the pellets? I have been getting the Standlee from Tractor Supply. I can have my feed store order some- but having never fed alfafa pellets- I wasn't sure what to have them order.

| Not sure what part of Oklahoma you are in but you could check out the Omnis cubes as they already have the oats and flax in them. |

Location: Heart of Texas | I feed my 19 year old hardkeeper, free choice pasture all day, then he gets locked up at night with 2lbs of renew gold, 2 flakes of alfalfa, 2 flakes of coastal, and I top the grain with Omega Horseshine. He's never looked better. I like the horse shine for the added omega's and flax. Does wonder for their coats and hooves. Plus its very economical. But it has a wondertude of ingredients that do great stuff. But after tinkering with the mixture it was the added alfalfa that made the difference in his weight. |

Location: Willows, CA | Renew Gold does have more calories than grain based feeds. 1700 per pound. I suspect that is not the issue with this horse, as it sound like plenty of total calories are being fed when the entire current diet is considered. They just are not being used. If you will give me a call I would be happy to help without adding a bunch of products that will not help without getting the system fully functional.
