I have not got a new horse in YEARS! But I pick up a horse tomorrow. My question is, do you give them a few days to chill and get used to their new home before working them on the ground and under saddle? He is a 13 yr. old gelding used as a team roping horse and has done barrels as a young horse. We will be using him as a ranch horse and some trail riding.

I like to give them at least three or four days to settle in, maybe more if needed.

Thank you- that is what I was thinking. Do you hang out with them, brushing, etc? He is a people horse and it will be a week or so before I turn him out with my gelding.

I can hardly wait to bring him home, even my son is excited to see him. He is a cow man, but I think he is fixing to come over to the dark side, lol!

Is your new buddy home with you Yet?

Nope. The guy who brought him down had a "bad bull day" and needed to haul it to the auction barn so it won't be until tomorrow afternoon until I can go get him.

I like to give them at least three or four days to settle in, maybe more if needed.

I wish more people would do this. Had a lady drive 10 hours one way to try my colt, spent 3 hours riding him!! Bought him and drove 10 hours home with no hay because she didn't believe in hay nets. Got home, slapped a saddle on him straight out of the trailer and he broke in two. She accused me of drugging him. Then realized he just needed some time to chill out a little. Don't be like her. I usually give mine 24 hrs if a relatively short trip. If i was hauling to a big barrel race, I would want to make sure he could be sane and ready to run the next day. Green, young horses or ones that aren't seasoned? 3-5 days.

we usually give them a day or two to just acclimate, then only brush and LOVE on another few days. Then a short stress free ride or two.
