I own two horses.
#1- 16 year old mare. My barrel horse. She has COPD.

#2 - 24 year old gelding. My old barrel horse. Healthy other than some arthritis and history of colic.

I am in college working towards a Range Science major. I just got a job for the summer that will take me away from this area for about half the time this summer. The other half I will be around home but working a lot.

What do I do with these horses?

I feel like it is unfair for them to stand around in those tiny pens day in and day out where I currently board without anyone messing and playing with them. I am out there 5-6 days a week right now for sure so they get lots of activities every week. They would continue to get their supplements daily but my price of board will go up because I will not be around to help out and work off board like I do now.

Do I find a new place to throw them out to pasture and let them be horses for the summer? Most likely in that situation they won't be getting their special feed or supplements to help COPD or arthritis. But then again their issue could get better just getting out and moving on a huge pasture.

I didn't even think I would get this job but I got it and now and I am freaking out at the thought of leaving them...

Anyone been in my situation before? Boarding and having to be gone for extended periods of time with horses that have some issues?

I would find a good safe pasture to turn them out while your away working. I agree its not fair to them to set in tiny pens while your gone they need to be out and moving around and being the horse that they are.

That is the way I am leaning right now. Only seems fair to them to be out and enjoy themselves if I am not there to give them something to do. If this job wasn't such a good opportunity I wouldn't do it. I don't want to adult.

A year or three on dr green never hurt a horse. Especially for one with arthritis, they need the constant low level movement. Helps keep everything moving.
You could also look for a lease type situation, if you can find somebody you can trust.

I've been away from my mares for nearly 5 years now and they've been turned out. Let them enjoy being horses for a little while.

Can you take them with you? Maybe find a barn near your job.

I wish! I will be moving from study site to study site all across ND so I won't have a "home base" per say. I wish they could be travel size and just tag along. I also have 2 french bulldogs at home that will be staying with my parents. Going to be hard to be away from all "children."

Do you have any friends or even a BHW member near you that could just put em in a pasture and make sure they get their meds?

I'm talking with a few friends who have pastures who might take them in and can give them their supplements a good chunk of the time. Right now that is seeming like my best option
