Location: Ohio | so what is everyone's secret to making a 2D/3D horse a winning 1D?? Is there such thing?? or am I asking for a unicorn lol...because I really want to improve and get into the 1D but I don't know if its possible...is it because I am not "juicing" my horse, because all I have her on is good feed (Tribute), good grass/alfalfa hay, and a joint supplement, and daily turn out with another horse...I just feel like there might be supplements, or something that could give her some more energy and get us a little bit faster lol!! Opinions, suggestions, training techniques, supplements I welcome it all! |

| A 1D rider who can push them all the way into the turn, no wasted steps, no rating too much, in and out -and a horse that has the athletic ability to turn on a dime. |

| While sometimes speed can be found within the horse, usually the speed is found within the rider who can make the horse wrap barrels with no wasted steps and clean movements. Also one that can ride the horse into the first barrel without hesitation. |

I don't get to ride in the winter so coming back now it seems to take me awhile to get going and then before you know it the season is over!! I guess im looking for a magic wand to help us lol |

I'd say your magic wand would be working with your trainer to make sure you learn the buttons to hit to gain that confidence you need and your horse is confident in you. |

| there is no magic juice to make a horse run faster than he can . but you can give them more want too
?its also horses are like humans they each have their own talent some just can not i can not dance like micheal jackson could no matter how bad i wanted too

Location: Michigan | Not only are not all horses capable, but many riders are not capable no matter how much they train.
And if both are capable then you have the question of teamwork, not all pairs can work perfectly together at a high level.
My solid 1D mare was getting older, found a solid younger replacement. Worked and ran her for 2 years, she would give me glimpses of her ability but nothing consistant. Daughter started riding her and a month later she was reliably clocking 1D times, I really loved riding her but dang if our styles just did not mesh.
Sometimes it is just not there no matter how hard you want it to be. |

My mare was 12 years old and had never clocked out of the 4D with her previous owner (only person to run her) when I bought her. I legged her up good, had her worked on regularly by chiro and massage (she was insanely sore - I pressed down her withers and back and she literally went down to her knees), and got her ulcers under control. Also change her feed. She also was overly bendy in her turns, so I squared her up just a little and didn't let her start her turn until she was further past the barrel. She is now consistently in the 2D, and has placed in the 1D plenty of times. One of her more mediocre runs (first run after a layoff and she wasn't really in as good of shape as she should of been, but it was one of the bigger local races and I really wanted to run) and we ended up top of the 3D with Amber Moore & Paige winning with the arena record. If she would have clocked one of her normal times for that arena she would have been top of the 2D, behind an insanely fast run.
That's good enough for me. I don't rodeo and am not a professional. I'm happy to have a horse that at least stands a chance of placing well against good competition.
That being said, you'll notice I said she was 3D behind an NFR horse because it wasn't a very good run and she wasn't in the best shape. In order for this horse to be 1D, I HAVE to ride her correctly, she HAS to be in great shape, and she cannot be sore. She's gritty and gives 110% regardless of all other factors, but for her case those things are the difference between her being 1D and being 3D. If I haven't done my part to prepare her, it usually shows in our times. |

| Agree with what most have said above! There's so much about rider ability and confidence involved. I love this saying, "Practice like you've never won before, and compete like you've never lost". Never get overly cocky, always be consistent with your training! Horses are creatures of habit. Also, one of the biggest things that helped me was the CONDITIONING of my horses. Now, when I warm my horses up, they are sweating. I do lots and lots of warm up maneuvers in and out of the arena. They've never been as fit as they are now. So everything is coming so much easier to them =] |

Location: Naples, Texas | I know I don't have an answer for you, but from what I have noticed from watcing is there are a lot of horses out there that clock with what I would consider big mistakes. Mine have to have a flawless run to even have a chance at all. I do believe that it has more to do with me than the horse though. |

Location: LA Lower Alabama | A better feed program, a better work out program, a better maintenance program, a better rider etc. Years ago when I sold my mare she went through one set of hands to her current home and has won so much it makes me jealous. BUT I knew that she had "it" she just needed maintenance and work outs that I could not provide her with back then. |

| Get a really really good workout program for your horse, he's an athlete and must be in perfect shape if you want to be at the top. Figure out a feed program that he feels AND looks good on. Make sure he feels his best, teeth, chiro, feet, ulcers, hocks, everything. Re-watch videos of your runs and study study study! Figure out where he is losing time, even a fraction of a second. Are you riding your horse like he needs to be ridden? Watch youtube videos of the pros, Lisa Lockhart, Sherry Cervi, Charmayne James. What do they do that you don't? Trainingbarrelhorses.com, study training videos. Try anything and everything they describe in the videos! I bought a solid 3D barrel horse, and completely altered his training style, fixed his issues and now we are winning big rodeos and 1D. I'm not saying it works every time, but if you work at it enough you can really improve! If you have any more questions or want me to look over your videos feel free to PM me! |

Location: Lost in the corn of Iowa. | I have to agree with the responses above. My advice, get your core in shape and get your horse a good workout routine as well. And also realize that not every horse is 1D capable as with riders, some are just not 1D riders either. Also what helped me was to have someone video your runs in slow motion. My daughter was playing with her iPhone and she did this just because and I was able to literally see my run frame for frame. That helped me tons if I felt like I was hitting a wall somewhere. I'm not tech savvy so I don't know if you can do it on other brands of phones but I know that she can do it on her iPhone. |
