Has anyone else noticed everyone changing the groups to "custom" I have seen a ton of people saying that they changed the policies and you can no longer sell animals through FB. Anyone know if there is any truth to this? Do you believe it will continue to happen regardless of the policies? I buy/sell a lot through Fb. It is truthfully the only reason I have the dumb thing.

PETA lovers got everything changed. It is now against FB policy to buy or sell animals on FB. However, if the groups are "custom" and don't have the word buy and sell on them then groups can get away with it. Many ISO and For Sale ads have been taken down by Facebook and group administrators have been warned. I don't see it lasting long. Either someone will start the buy and sell thing on Instagram or Twitter and FB will lose a lot of traffic, or FB will re-enable buy and sell pages to buy and sell animals.
ETA: I think FB blamed it on the animal rights groups, but I think they were just tired of not getting any profit off ads. I'm sure they will somehow make us start paying to advertise animals for sale... JMO

I don't have a Facebook, but scroll thru public sale pages sometimes. I've noticed a lot of ads now saying "very nice 5 year old halter for sale, comes with free horse. Halter is 15 hands tall on particular horse... etc"

This is what i was afraid of. While I do not mind paying for ads to an extent, most people do. And I wonder what they will turn to next. Im sure IG or twitter like mentioned. There are tons of people who sell 1500-3000 horses that wont pay for an ad. (especially on numerous group pages) I know myself, I post in every group relevant to what the horse is. That may be 3 groups, it may be 10. I have also seen people posting about halters, but mainly just in joking posts instead of making them actual sale posts.

All of this being said, besides here obviously.. what are some sites besides facebook that people search regularly for prospects?

Facebook has really had an impact on our industry. It makes finding horses easier that normally wouldn't even be an option for you. However, it's also raised the price of many horses that we were paying about $500-$1000 for. People will catfish first time owners in and they will pay more for a horse that seasoned owners wouldn't. A lot of people have been flipping sale barn horses faster and easier with Facebook. I can see the good and the bad of selling online through facebook.
I think this change is going to affect a lot of small farms, small horse breeding operations and trainers. It will make it harder for them to sell. One post and your ad gets seen by tens of thousands on a sale page for free.... Try and divert that much traffic to a site such as barrel horse world and the task becomes a full time job. I really think the impact is going to be greater than anyone anticipated. The ripple effect will go on for miles...
While I do use BHW for ads it's a lot easier to just post to FB. With FB you can guarantee that people will see your post because most groups send out notifications when a new item is posted.... BHW can't do that. If they did, our emails would be blown up daily....
My point is, I think a lot of the traffic will revert to other sites, but I do think it's going to effect prices. People won't want to hold onto horses for months waiting for people to find their ad. They'll lower prices to sell fast. Horses sell fast on Facebook and usually for around the money first posted.

I see most FB for sale pages are still active.   Is it because they are a closed group?

I have noticed I have been getting page updates almost daily of pages that are closed being changed to "custom" and pages that were public are now being changed to closed. So that may very well be the case.

If I'm seriously marketing a nice horse, BHW brings in more serious buyers.  For cheap ones I want sold fast, FB has been the way to go.  I've sold them in anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 days and it was worth wading through the tire kickers.

The thing people have to realize is that not everyone has Facebook, I've sold more horses from BHW $30 bucks then free Facebook ads. Plus you don't have to deal with 12 year olds messaging you on Facebook when you pay for a website for advertising.

I've also heard people complaining that now more horses will go to slaughter because they've done this....

I am not by any means against BHW. I am here, obviously. But I do agree with Three 4 luck. If the horse is cheap, and I just need to move it, FB is my go to. If super nice, and higher priced, I always go to BHW.

I have posted a horse on FB and sold within a half hour. It is well worth weeding through the tire kickers in some instances. Where I have also posted on BHW and sold within a few days. You obviously get more serious buyers on BHW. I have also had my fair share of people who havent read the ad and asking if I will consider trades when it clearly states NO TRADES, as well as low ball offers from kids getting my number or email from BHW.

On another note, when I am looking for something, my ISO ads on FB generate much more than my ISO ads on BHW ever have. I do travel for horses though. I know plenty of people who think 2 hours round trip is the end of the world. I do understand that not everyone has FB, but it has done wonders for me finding nice prospects.

Are there a lot of other sites that charge for your ad? I am only aware of 2.

I don't have FB and never will. I'm old school, and I'm what most consider young. I call people and even email. Yes, email! FB has turned into a dumping ground for freebie advertising and people trying to "thrive" on MLM, no pun intended. I'm not even going to mention all the other garbage, and now this FB killer. Breaking news this afternoon.

FB live killer has confirmed shot himself.

Hubby and I don't have FB either. And we're young. I'm 28, he's 32. A lot of people find it odd that we don't do social networking aside from I'm on BHW and he's a member on an off-roading forum. I still browse public pages.

I know people hate craigslist, but I've bought and sold a lot off it. Sure, I've been lied to a lot. But I wouldn't have my awesome little mare if I didn't buy off Craigslist. Granted, I don't sell $10k horses. It I have sold a number of good trail and gymkhana, beginner safe horses. I've also advertised on dreamhorse and equinenow with little to no interest.

Yep, Craigslist is great for selling odd items and especially farm equipment. I get the "you're not on FB?" comments too. It's cool to see I'm not alone. I feel safer off their radar but I also miss out on certain things like updates on jackpots, etc. If it's something important, I usually get a text from friends.

I just noticed an ad today saying the same thing. I will confused because it said buckskin halter $1500. That that was a bit pricey for a halter.

What I hate about their changes now I can no longer search the groups so I can find an ad of something I'm looking at. Very frustrating to have to look through all the ads again.
