Everyday I am continually work on suppling this off the track racey QH. He naturally is a rollback style free runner. Not a big stopper. Every single ride we are working on keeping soft through his entire body and moving forward, but it just isn't making a difference on the pattern. I have tried over bending him and holding him in the "arc"
position all the way up into his pocket, this will lead to him rolling back on the same side of the barrel every single time. And even when he does go to finally turn over himself he stiffens in neck/ribs/shoulders.
I am so used to the cowy 4x4s. He has definitely humbled me and I'm back to getting lessons! Would love to know some successful exercises that has worked for this free running /rollback/stiff combo. Thank you!!

Get.off the barrel for a while. Most of those are track.broke no stop. Have to stop.and back easy. They for most part are taught to push. And that will make one stiff. Have to be to run into bit and go forward. Also from experience the presence of the barrel will make one stiff. Pressure of the barrel. Get horse better handling better stop.and back. Move off barrel 15to 20.ft right now until you feel the horse , relax. Use your feet more than your hands. They been pulled on if you go there more they go back to the track.
I ridden a lot off of the track. Put a foundation in first. I drive most first put a hackamore. On them. When you go.in.their mouth they go back to the track in their mind.
Don't pull use your feet more. This is experience I have had with many.
Think different.

I have a 5 year old right now that no matter how much bend I give him in slow work, and no matter what bits I put on him, he will always have that square running roll back style horse, that is just his natural style that he picked. I don't think you can train a natural style out of one but rather you nrrd to work and learn how to ride/train one like that. Get with someone who has horses who run like that or train that style and see what they do. I have a good square drill I do with mine that keeps their shoulder up through the turn the whole way around. It's hard to explain but maybe I can video it for you.
Kim Landry/Sharon Camarillo drills would be good for that style.
