| I have noticed that most people turn away from Thoroughbreds in general, but what is everyone's general consensus with appendix bred horses?
If you were looking for a new prospect, would you turn completely away from a straight appendix bred horse.. if not, would you prefer TB on top or bottom, and reasoning for that pick.

Location: Jersey Girl | I have only owned one, but I don't think I would want one again. He had a good mind but was high maintanence and could be on the anxious side. Vastly different from my cowbred horses. |

| I have a whole pasture full. the mares have had their papers changed to permanent registered and the gelding that is almost all thoroughbred came that way. (permanent registered) |

| My new 3 year old is appendix. He is 50% super cow bred. He " Acts" more cow bred. Size wise and mentality. And this sucker has only seen the pattern maybe 6-7x and already " Has it". I really do feel I could just make a run right now and he would be fine... Not going to, but I could. I think its like anything else, each horse is different. |

| I got into a few new prospects last night, and two are straight appendix. I have had a few prior and never had issues with them. But most have been out of Tb studs and Qh mares. I have had the opposite as well and some were ok and some werent.
I do believe i prefer QH mare, but was curious on other peoples opinions and experiences. I know when it comes to sell they are sometimes harder. But the mares are owns daughters of Royal Quick Dash and Mr. Eye Opener. And they are QH built and seem quiet so didnt figure I could go wrong. |

Location: Kansas | I currently have an APHA mare that is by a TB stud. She does have tons of go when asked, but built like a brick house (pretty obese right now) which is good because I've never been a fan of the Runners body. She's smart and gentle. |

| This mare's momma WAS appendix. If handled properly while training, there is no difference. As long as the horse is started correctly and taught to use themselves, they make outstanding barrel horses.

Location: North Dakota | I have an appendix mare (QH sire, TB dam) that I ran in the futurities last year. 1D Futurity, rodeo money earning, placed at HS rodeos with my neice. I wouldn't shy away from buying more. As with any horse, I take into acccount the individual horse in front of me and go from there. I do prefer the top side to be QH, but thats just personal preference.

Location: Pacific Northwest | My mare is appendix, and had 7 (terrible) starts on the track. She's a great horse. She can be quirky but my 98% foundation bred QH gelding isn't any better.
She's consistent 2D, and has a lot of try. She was 12 when I got her and still in the 4D. She's pretty sensitive and seems to feed off of whether or not she thinks you like her lol her previous owner (who in friends with, so nothing against her) just didnt click with her. Now that her and I have clicked she always lays down a run regardless of if she's sore, had a bad warm up, etc. I love that about her. She really loves her job and it shows. She's a joy to run.

Location: Wherever the Army sends my husband | Appendix papers are a classification of registry. Not a type or build of horse. Granted most are pretty leggy and lean since it steams from tb blood but if its far enough back they can look like a bulldog type quarter. Appendix registered horses can only be crossed with regular papered quarter horses to have a registered foal. That foal will be appendix as well. As someone else mentioned you can cross them to paints to avoid that if you get a breeding stock foal its worth about the same. Now if you compete on your horse and it gets its ROM in an event then your horse will be eligible for regular papers. As for value, that depends on bloodlines and performance record. Not appendix vs regular papers. A buyer should always know up front as it will dissuade some. But no one looks at my mare and thinks appendix papers. |

| I loved my gelding. Had to put him down at 16. Appendix registered and raced until 6. ROM in AQHA racing. Did well. Was a badA barrel horse and had a huge heart. If he hurt, you wouldn't know it. Wouldn't hesitate to buy another. Negatives: he was an EXTREMELY hard keeper. He had that TB metabolism. Also was more of a free runner and a nervous soul...didn't really tie without a blocker ring. Couldn't throw a rope off of him. He was more like 75% TB though. |

| You need to understand that the thoroughbred horse that is the reason for a horse being appendix may be back 4 generations. For our purposes, there really is no difference. The ONLY problem that you will ever encounter is if you breed an appendix horse to another appendix horse OR an appendix horse to a throughbred.
I have a neighbor who has a stallion that is a son of Dash For Perks out of daughter of Disco Jerry --- the magic cross. He is appendix and was injured as a youngster. He cannot be ridden so he will always be appendix. They breed him to their mares and do not have a problem. His offspring will all be appendix but who cares.
Appendix papers are no longer yellow. They have not been yellow for the past 9 years, at least. They now say APPENDIX CERTIFICATE at the top and look just like the permanent certificate. |

| In response to KD Running horses-- I do understand that it is a registry. I have been around track horses my entire life. I was asking general opinions on whether people were turned away from them or not turned away form them when purchasing a prospect.. particularly when they are STRAIGHT out of a TB on one side or the other. Sorry if I had not made myself clear. If not turned away when looking for a horse to purchase, which side is preferred to be TB and which side preferred to be QH (if there is a preference) Personal experiences etc. Where i live, some of my friends included as ridiculous as it is, will not touch a horse if there is a TB on papers. Even if the horse has a ROM and has AQHA papers. I also understand that it is appendix is not a "type or build" but as you stated the TB blood NORMALLY pulls lean and leggy. Both of the prospects I picked up are thick, big boned, and heavy built..giving them (in my words) a QH build. |

| I suggest that you learn about the bloodlines that are winning and form your own opinion. The only thing I will say is that ANY horse needs to be broke well enough that you have control of it front and rear for you to get the most out of it, and any horse can be screwed up by improper manaagement. |

| I whole heartedly agree that ANY horse can be screwed up by improper management. However, that was not the topic of this conversation, or at all where I was expecting it to turn. The management of my horses are not in question, the thoughts of a potential buyer is what is in question..
