I have access to some 50/50 Timothy/Alfalfa hay. When they had it tested the RFV was 134.
Is that a good range for that mix?

RFV is mainly used for cattle.e Other factors enter in also. How active the horse is and a couple of other factors

There is no RFV calculation for horses, only cattle so a lot comes into place than just a number. I am not a guru, but I thought this article was helpful

while it's true that RFV was delveloped mostly used in the Ruminant world it can be helpful in making buying decisions for horse hays.
Obviously if two hays have a comparable price I would go with the one that had the higher RFV.

She's selling this hay for $4 bucks a bale! I read a few articles on RFV but I didnt know if it really related to horses or not.

To me, 134 RFV for that mix seems higher than normal. I would imagine that it is very good hay, either way. However, I don't find RFV to be all that useful in horse hay analysis. I think the protein percentage and energy values would be more helpful. Generally 50/50 timothy alfalfa is a very good mix and should feed very well.

Im sorta skeptical at this point...I thought that was super cheap up here too. Im from the south where people paid $24 for tiny little bales of alfalfa! Up here you hear of people paying $8-$10!
