| I have an open horse and want to get a younger prospect to bring along with me and get going.
I have it narrowed down to two (both are 6 year olds) -
1) Nicely bred (1/2 cow horse, 1/2 race blood), pretty broke with a decent handle, not super fast - but decent speed
2) Nicely bred (all race blood), was on the track and is more than race broke but not super broke (needs more), is exceptionally fast and is actually freakish in his speed.
Both have good dispositions and are gentle.
I am an advanced rider when it comes to barrel racing and have lots of experience.
Which one should I choose and why? HELP! |

| I would pick #1 for sure, the speed will come, and a cow/race cross will most likely be better minded and since he isn't OTT it will be easier to start. Talk to people who have gotten colts OTT, it's way more challenging than you'd expect. |

My horse is off the track, her last start was as a 4 year old and she was running barrels by the time she was 7. Super soft and flexible, great mover, and well patterned.
The challenge with OTT horses is just that they already know they can run, but it's not impossible. If they want to turn, they want to turn, and I don't think being on the track changes that. Fastest horse I've ever owned is a ranch bred gelding that never ran on the track and he was still incredibly hard to instill the idea of rating into. My OTT mare on the other hand is actually pretty ratey. |

| I personally would chose the cow/race cross. But I think you will get a lot of opinions based on what they prefer. I think a more accurate response would give bloodlines and photos. |

| I'm just a chick with an opinion but I always get cow/race cross when I can! In fact my horse I'm running right now who's been "that horse" for me is cutting bred and loves working cows! I still work cows with her often or even let my dad (or a very short list of other cowboys I know), ride her a few days during the week just to have her do something besides run in circles! She can be hot because she's got a TON of power and she needs me to be confident so it's fun for me to work cows on her and watch those ears perk up and her blood kick in. She watches them like she's done it every day for years, (she hasn't lol), she just "knows" what to do. But she also loves running barrels, as long as I help her she loves to go & that seems to work for us! I think it helps keep her head level, when we're running every weekend and she doesn't get into the pasture to have another job I can tell a difference. |

Location: Cocoa, Florida | I'm a huge cow bred fan, two I'm running right now have more cow/performance then run and can still hang. They're smarter and easier to train (I think) and I've seen some freakishly fast cow horses - think about it, they're bred to chase a cow! |
