I just recently got a new horse for Christmas as a present. He was mostly bought as a trail horse being told he couldn't race from a previous injury. As i was looking into his records and talking to the last vet that treated his injury i was informed he is cleared to run. To find out he was a 2D barrel horse he placed consistently and ran low 15s. This boys had it rough the first owner beat him in the head all the time then his next owner only took him out to race him other then that was left alone in the field.Which made him halter shy. He is bred with some of the top lines in the industry and loves attention. I tried him on the pattern i few weeks ago and noticed that he'll run and do what you ask but he's only doing cause he wants to listen but his heart don't seem in it. Is this possible for a horse to just not want to run barrels anymore really? I do have another horse that i run that loves it. More of a curiosity question.

Yes they can, hes burned out. And if he was sold as trail horse, theres a reason for it and needs to stay a trail horse and not be running barrels..Sounds like hes got a good home with you..

Yes they can.  When they are drilled and drilled...as you said hit in the head....beat.  Like what Roxie said he was sold as a trail horse and that is what he needs to be used for.  It sounds like he is going to have a really good home with you.

Yes, especially if they're sore or over ran

Sure can! Especially if they are mistreated, not taken care of, beat, drilled, ran too much, never rewarded for their behavior..

I had a gelding like that. He was smoking 2D horse and 1D pole horse.. but I didn't know when I got him that he was burnt out. I gave him a year off, did anything else but barrels.. tried to bring him back a year later. He would lope a pattern.. but then minute you'd start to push him he would fight you in the turns, if you got him to turn he would stop dead in his tracks on his first and second barrel, and if you made it through the pattern he'd try to run you into the fence coming home.

Needless to say, he is with another forever home now being a full time trail horse. :) Barrels just was not his thing anymore.

Thank you for honesty. He is a jam up trail horse. I trust him to take care of me and he does.
