Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | Some time back, a friend suggested a Ralgro implant for a mare that was always in heat. Well, I never did it because I was worried about side effects long term. Now, I have a pony mare that has been in heat since February, and she's driving me (and a couple of my geldings) crazy. I'm not worried about her breeding sustainability--she's a grade, probably mostly hackney pony, and I want her brain in full function, since she's my son's ride. So, my question is: can anyone tell me if it's the Ralgro S (that's the only thing my brain wants to remember), or one of the others. Or can I substitute Revlor G, or Component EC? I really don't want to put a pony on Regumate...or breed her .

Just brought in a mare a few days ago that is having a nasty heat. From my understanding, she's constantly in heat. Difficult to ride, plants her feet and won't move, tail wringing, short striding and spraying constantly. Hope you get some good feedback.

Gracious! My pony sounds mild compared to that! I'm just wanting her to stay settled down for my son and not get so worried about where the other horses are. And to behave for the farrier again! He did not appreciate her flirtations last week, LOL.

| Try regumate. Its expensive, like 300.00 for a 100 day supply but WELL WORTH IT. My mare was in heat 24/7, extremely painful for her. Not her fault, just how she was. Bumping on trailer, total B*&()*&)*&, peeing, kicking, etc. Now she is 100% relaxed, focused, sweet heart. None of the herbal junk works for mares like that. | |

At this point in time, that expense would be hard to swallow. The implant is like $2 (because I can buy one from a friend that has cattle), and should last several months. The pony still behaves for the most part without it, I'm just tired of her pee'ing constantly and making my geldings stupid.

I hear ya. Mine, thankfully still worked even at her worst. She is a TOUGH TOUGH lady, she almost liked getting ridden on her most painful days to take her mind off of it. I felt horrible for her because she would go into her stall and just SCREAM and squeel from the pain. I was going to consider having her spayed but my vet wanted to try this first and it worked. Second option is a marble implant. I did ask about the cattle implant and my vet was EXTREMELY against the idea.

Location: Pittsburg, Texas 75686 | There is a shot you can give once a month or once every 3 months. It is for mares to keep them out of heat. Mares that have bad heat cycles and rodeoing get these shots. Talk to a good horse vet or better yet, a reproductive vet. I would not give the other, it's for cattle. Not a good thing

Location: In The Snow, AZ | I just phoned the vet. He is highly recommending an injectable pellet. He claims it lasts 4-6 months, and has been very effective with his clients. Exam fee $50, the pellets run approx $125. I think we're going to give that a go. He said the next option is Regumate but really likes to try the pellets first, since Regumate is expensive and not good to handle.
