When you sell a horse how long do you give people to return it or are all "sales final" when the horse leaves your place.

Thanks

I hate to give a hard and fast answer on something like this.

I feel like in certain special circumstances, I would maybe help somebody out. I sold my Stoli mare and right after she was delivered the buyer had some personal stuff go on and needed to sell her. I accepted her on payments so by the time she was delivered, the money was half spent on other things and I couldn't have bought her back. I wish, had I had everything up front, I could have refunded her and got her back.

But if you buy a horse and then tell me a week later you want to return it because its lame, and you didn't do a PPE and you rode the snot out of it for a week, heck no.

I don't feel obligated as a seller to give anyone an option to back out. If I feel compelled to do so, that's my own doing.

An old BHW member use to say that horses were a perishable item, like eggs. That statement is very true. If a horse leaves my house healthy and working, I won't be responsible for taking the horse back if the buyer runs it into the ground, cripples it by using a bad farrier, or is just overall not real smart about how they handle it. For me, all sales are final. If the horse doesn't work out, I might help them find a new buyer, but I'm not obligated to help them unless I want to.

I have only had one person ask to return a horse. They had the mare for three months and decided she would not make a good roping horse. I had sold the horse as a trail riding horse. I said no refunds especially after three months and the girl started screaming and threatening etc... I just hung up!

This^^^^ unless I really like the person and its with end a few days of buying my horse and I know for a fact that they did'nt screw up my horse, but if over a week then they are on their own, just like me if I buy something, horse, saddle are what ever I just suck it up and move on I would never call someone and tell them I'm bringing it back.

All Sales Final.
If I really like the person and they haven't screwed up the horse I usually try to help them with a resale. But I'm not going to be obligated to do so.

For us it just depends on the horse and the situation.

If we're selling because we don't care for him, he doesn't fit our program, etc. all sales are final.

There's been a few circumstances over the years where my SO has sold a finished horse and for one reason or another it hasn't worked out - within a week or so of the horse leaving. Usually circumstances where the buyer had unforeseeable personal issues come up or they didn't think a certain quirk was a big deal until they got home and discovered for them, it was. We don't sell very many horses anymore and my SO and his dad have a reputation for making solid horses, especially youth horses, we want to see them in homes that suit them.

Would not take a horse back for a lameness issue, especially when a PPE has been done.

I have a mare that was born on my property (she was an oops baby, I bought the mare & oops she had a baby) she is a back burner horse to me, however has a lot of sentimentalism too her for me.
My husband wants me to get rid of her!! I can put anyone who comes to ride on her, so as far as I'm concerned she doesn't have to go anywhere!!!

I had a guy come out n ride her for his daughter, I told him to try her for 30 days n if she didn't work bring her back & I would refund his money. He brought her back!

I have sold this mare & bought her back once already too!!!

She is the only one that I'm prepared to do this with, I didn't know the first guy, but went with my gut on that one, the 2nd one I should never have sold her to those people!!

I usually say 7 days I'll take it back but it must be sound and remain sound for 24 hours after arriving.

I've only ever had to take one horse back and it was after a month. I sold a quiet kid safe horse to a young girl and a month later they called me complaining he was bucking and rearing. This is a horse that had never done anything like this before. They had their 4H leader try the horse and same thing so I said bring it back and I'll have a look.

It had fallen in a concrete pen and had a sore leg plus they'd been riding in a pony saddle and his back was so sore touching him he nearly fell over.

I took him back because it was in his best interest.. It took me months to get him sound and happy again.

I sold one recently that they tried 3 times. Once at my house, once at a friends arena and once at a race. Even entered on her. Did very well. I let them take her home even though they still owed money on her. I get a call the next morning at 7:30. The dad told me the mare had set back and flipped over with a saddle on and had kicked a fence and they didnt want a problem horse. I informed him they spent over 5 hours riding and handling this mare and I didnt know what his kid did to her but she wasnt one to act like that. Long story short, they brought her back and I never got the exact story. They now ignore me at races. The mare was funny about her face and had a nice puncture in her hip when she came back too. Who knows but shes back and working really nice for me. I wouldnt usually take one back but I didnt want my horse to suffer. To hell with people.... You cant fix stupid.

Pretty much!!!! I'm not openly advertising her, but do have a couple people I know that need a good solid trail horse, that I wold consider letting her go to!!!!
Other than that I'm fine with her as she is!!!
We're going to try barrel racing this spring!!! lol

All sales final.

I recently had a buyer come back to me 7 months after purchase. Horse piled its rider. Never had that issue with him and most certainly would not have let a child climb on if I thought there was any way he would do something like that. Buyer wanted me to buy the horse back. Unfortunately, I had to tell her no and explain that I have no clue what happened in those 7 months. If I can make a big impact on outside horses I ride for others in a month, buyers can make a big impact on horses they buy in that same time frame.

I will never feel obligated to take a horse back once it leaves my property. A person can come and spend as much time as they deem necessary, within reason of course, with the horse, to make a good decision. But if they buy, it's theirs. Now, if it's a nice horse, I will offer to take the horse back at a discounted rate. I don't know what was done with it once it left my care. So they can take my offer or leave it.

I traded a gelding recently who was really nice, calm, mellow and a little too lazy... for a known horse traders lil yellow mare that was too much for her daughter. The gelding never gave me a problem, aside from needing lots of motivation to speed up. He wasn't spooky. Had a decent pattern. Was great being hauled and doing exhibitions. Just slow going. Two weeks after the trade, he's a bronc according to the woman. She hasn't asked to trade back, and I wouldnt if she wanted to. He was a nice gelding. Unfortunately, this yellow mare is a screwball, but is making progress. I'm chalking it up to, the lady doesn't know how to deal with horses. I don't need a bronc in my barn. It's sad how fast the gelding went downhill. But he's gone. That sale is final.

Edited to add: I sent her videos of me riding the gelding. We met at a common area and I rode the mare she had. Offered several times to saddle up my gelding for myself or her to ride, and she didn't want either....

I wouldn't take on back unless it was a very particular set of circumstances. It doesn't take much to screw up a good horse.

My husband broke his elbow in October, and didn't think he'd be able to ride for at least 6 months. We have too many head horses so he told me to list the one he'd been debating on selling anyway, while he was in decent shape still.

THREE people tried the horse. None bought him. But from just a couple different people riding him and roping steers, my husband is still "fixing" him. Dang team ropers---most really do fit the stereotypes. 2 out of the 3 anyway lol.
