Hey, I was wondering what you all are using on your colts, he's got about 6 months on him and patterned on barrels, I just have had him in a d-ring snaffle. But he tends to travel with his nose out and is pretty heavy on the bit. I do bit him up and it helps, but I was just thinking another bit might help better. Any suggestions?

I think the first step up bit we went to with my colt was a short shank 2 pc twisted Ed Wright  bit and a german martingale. It really lightened him up.

I moved my mare out of a D-Ring to a three piece twisted wire square sliding gag (knock-off Loomis). It distributes pressure basically across her whole head. Instead of pressure on just the bars and palate with the d-ring, it places pressure on the bars, lips, tongue, and poll. As long as you have soft hands (as with any bit) this bits offers almost immediate release of pressure and I feel like it's much more functional and puts great feel on a young one since they can't really dump themselves forward and brace against it.

My step up from a snaffle is always a JR Cowhorse =] Love them! Very mild step up bit
