| I had friends retire to Arkansas. North east part and there was plenty of trail riding and barrel racing close. Taxes were really cheap too. |

Everytime we have extremely bad weather it always heads for SW Arkansas. In fact there is a county named Sevier County that is ALWAYS on the weather watch. |

I'm only 25, so I really haven't looked into it. Lol! But seriously, I feel like we're outnumbered in the retiree to working people ratio. |

I haven't looked into it, but I know quite a few people who have either retired to Tennessee or are planning to.
Personally, though, I have gotten so used to living here in Louisiana I don't know if I'm fit to live anywhere else, lol. We do get fair warning when storms are coming. I couldn't live anywhere they have tornadoes or earthquakes because there is no warning. Plus, our cold weather is not that bad at all.
The low taxes thing is another issue all together. I don't know how ours compare to the rest of the nation, but our property values aren't bad. I have always liked the area around the Toledo Bend Lake at the LA / TX border.
Don't pay any attention to New Orleans. They're in their own world down there. The rest of the state is not like that. |

Location: In the Hills of Texas | We retired to Texas and the only down side is the high cost of feeding a horse here. I'm sure there are other parts of Texas where you have actual pasture but 45 NW of San Antonio, we don't.
Lots of pluses to Texas but I do not like the intense heat.
We had looked into Arizona but it costs too much to live there plus I really missed the greenery.

Location: Where I am happiest | My husbands cousin retired to Florida with their 2 horses and they are extremily happy. Said it was the best decision they ever made.They studied and visited areas in alot of different states for 5 years before picking their state and area to retire to. Property is very reasonable there and it's hard to beat the weather.
I have a friend that moved to Arizona and they are very happy.
? Some parts of AZ are pretty high priced, yet there is alot f AZ that is dirt cheap and there is a ton of barrel racing and roping especially in the winter and trail riding is almost limitless. |

Location: Northwest | Dayton, Washington/area. It's really nice. Columbia County has low taxes. Close to Walla Walla and Tri Cities for tons of barrel racing. You can trail ride in desert, mountains, foothills all within 5-60 minutes. Great weather, four seasons. I don't know about low cost of living compared to other places. It's nothing like the cities but it's higher than the Midwest. |

Alot of those dirt cheap places don't have water, so be sure what is available if you are checking out places in AZ |

Location: "...way down south in the Everglades..." | Florida is good but can be pricey and yes, there are hurricanes. But certain areas are much, much more affordable. Just stay North of I-4. Much better trail riding and terrain. |

Yes she is in Alabama. I suggest finding pasture. Too close to the beach you get too sandy for good grass and mountains can be too rocky etc etc. As far as weather you just need to pick your poison: Snow or Hurricanes. Stay out of tornado alley and you will be fine.

| Property taxes are going through the roof in Texas. Can't beat the barrel racing in the Fort Worth area, but it is becoming over populated. Fifty miles away from the city is no longer far enough. Even though our property tax rate is frozen due to my husband's age, it is going up $200-$400 a year because of property value increase. Even though our house is paid off, our property tax divided by 12 is like having a house payment again!! |

| Reno, NV or surrounding areas. Property tax is low, no state tax. Typically get all 4 seasons, not alot of bugs. Location is nice when it comes to barrel racing, its within 2 hours of Sacramento, CA. So there are alot of barrel races in Reno and in Northern California. If you dont feel like barrel racing, there are a bunch of lakes within 30 mins of Reno. I think 80% of Nevada is BLM land, you can trail ride anywhere here.

Location: Phoenix | AZ if you can handle the heat. Trail riding galore, lots of roping and barrel races. Lot of outside activities to do. It's a little more expensive but there's hardly any wind, and the summer storms aren't scary. Did I mention Phoenix doesnt get snow?! |
