How often do mares actually ovulate both follicles if they are rather large? How difficult is the pinching off process if a mare does ovulate twice and has two embryos?

Most of the time a dominate will take over and the other will regress.

The pinching process is not that big of a deal as long as the vet knows what they are doing.

They seem to double-ovulate more frequently with the ovulation drugs we give them when AIing. That being said, I just had two mares that were being pasture bred double-ovulate and preg check with twins. So glad I went and had them checked. One mare was further along and both pregnancies had a heartbeat. My vet pinched the smaller one off. He said that with the new drugs they were using during the process there was only a 15-20% chance they would abort the other pregnancy. My other mare was only at a 13 and 14 day pregnancy and they were right beside eachother so we decided to re-check after 10 days to see if one absorbs or if they separate so one can be pinched.

My mare ovulated two follicles. The vet flushed both on the morning of day 8. Baby A measured appropriately sized for an 8 day and was implanted and checked in foal. Baby B measured about 2 days behind A. They will ultrasound this week to see if it made it.

I don't know how often it happens. But it happens enough that I want all my mares preg checked by the vet in time to do something about it if there are twins. Twins are no bueno for horses.

We just started ultrasounding & breeding our mares May 1st here, and so far I have had 3 donor mares out of 6 that have double ovulated!  Won't be doing any flushes until next week on any of those mares, but I've never had this many double ovulate the first 2 weeks of breeding season!

As for pinching, on a mare that's carrying her own babies, we have had really good luck with that.  I've had a couple mares in the past that double ovulated every time they cycled.

At what day do you flush the embryos for a recipient mare?

8 usually but have done it as early as 7 and as late as 9 days post ovulation successfully. The embryos will vary a lot on size.

Interesting. I wonder why so many are double ovulating this spring. This mare didn't have any drugs. This is her 2nd time being bred ever. In 2015, she was only bred once and only ovulated one follicle. Both of these were 30 something by 40 something, though one was slightly larger. Guess we'll find out in like 10 days! I'm glad it's not a big process. My vet just said she'll need to be on regumate for awhile.

This year is the first year I've bred my grey mare and she double ovulated both cycles we bred on. The first cycle we bred on a 40 while she had a 30, and that 30 ovulated a few days later, which ruined her hormones to settle. The second cycle she ovulated 2 follicles within 24 hours and only had 1 at 14 and 25 day check.
