This is one time I'm praying the media is reporting false news as far as casualties go.
I just looked up a couple of news reports (I'm from Missouri - north central). Two said "casualties" were referring to injuries not deaths. Praying this is correct. Pictures are awful.
Edited to add: there were apparently 12 children on the bus at the time. The driver is still trapped.

I hear you on this, and it being a school bus is so horrible to even to try to think about.. |

Thank goodness there are no fatalities.....where did this happen near Kirksville? When I read the title....I thought of the nasty storms that went through up there last night. |

It was in Kirkwood, a suburb of St. Louis. My nephew is going to Truman in Kirksville, so I immediately looked up. |

Location: Missouri | 19 children injured, none serious. I live about 45 minutes from there. It is a 3 lane interstate and a car passing a truck lost control and hit the concrete median and bounced back into traffic. These children were voluntary transfer students heading to elementary school. One child was thrown from the bus as it went down the revine. A man who jumped the fence to help said all of the children were already off the bus by the time he got there except the driver and a few others. I just don't understand why school buses don't have seat belts. They say because it would be hard to evacuate in an emergency if they wre buckled in, but omg flying around the inside of a bus during a crash is a better alternative? Really? In this day and age all children are accustom to wearing a seat belt and can operate their own car seat belt by the age of 2. Driver's and passengers get a ticket for not wearing a seat belt, yet we don't have them on school buses.

My thoughts EXACTLY .... we just had a school bus accident down this way not too long ago....the comments are that it would cost millions to "retro fit" the existing buses....but WHY don't they install them on the new ones being manufactured....It is just idiotic that they are required in cars and airplanes but not school buses! |

I thought I have heard this somewhere on the news that they were going to start putting seatbelts in the new school buses. |

There are several reasons for not having seatbelts on bus, ( I don't want to hijack the thread) but the main thing to note is that school bus incidents involving wrecks that cause injury to students are quite rare. We have to take classes on this stuff once a year and that was some of the information during those presentations. |
