Propping neck up after giving tranq and not giving horse enough breaks with a full spec.

Not tied as they use a girl to help hold it, but he did want to hold it up himself most of the time. I prefer that over the chance of over sedation. I have used them so many times with so many horses and never had an issue. But he is still very sore in his neck, mostly to put it down low. He can do side to side but slow about it. He is on stall rest and Bute. I see improvement every day, but it is still bothering me. He acts like I do when I sleep wrong and get a sore neck.

I was wondering if they can have short term muscle soreness or nerve damage.

Call the person who floated his teeth and ask them. I have found that people good at their job are willing to answer questions and help you if they can.

I did as soon as I got home and she was very helpful. Put a call in again today and waiting for her to call back when she is done with her customer.

I would give NutraWound, rub his neck down with a liniment and see if you can get a massage therapist to work on him. I would also check his TMJ spots and his atlas. The soreness could be coming more from his atlas then his actual neck.

She is as stumped as I am. Thought maybe just soreness from holding his neck.

NTO can you tell me more about this atlas? I am taking a short class this summer to do some massage on  my own horses...and of course he is the horse I was going to take.

You need to see it rather then trying to explain it.

I'll go find some links to videos and I will send them to you.

I would say time will take care of it as it could be as simple as just getting a kink in his neck but anything else could just speed up the process. I'm always sore after a dental appointment and some horses are the same way. Him eating fine is huge.

Depending on how bad his teeth were he may be out in his neck and need to see a chiropractor to adjust him, like if he'd been compensating for a hang up in his jaw. I usually try and get mine chiropracted following a teeth float.

I had one do this and I would run cool water over his sore neck a tiny bit of bute to take the edge off but just a tiny bit like a gram cause I didnt want him feeling to good and really mess himself up thinking he was better, but I did this for like 5 days in a roll and then after he was doing really better, I had him ciro like 2 weeks after and then he was all find and back to being a goober..
How long has he been sore?

he was just eating his alfalfa leaves off the floor, he is slow about it, but he was literally as low as he can go. Each day is improvement...but of course my first show of the year is next weekend and it is not looking good for him to be 100% and me back to riding him to get ready. I've got a vet appt for Tues.

Like NTO was saying since hes eating thats a good sign, and when mine was sore I was rubbing him down with a lininment in fact I think it was Sore no More something like that, but I didnt ride him at all untill I had the chiro go over him, mine could not get his head down to eat either at first so I was putting his hay in a bag for awhile then started to put his hay on the ground after a few days so he would use his neck muscles more, yep I think your horse show is going to be a wash out for you next weekend, what a bummer

I have his water and hay all up high as well. I kept some extra in a corner tub and when his tub up high ran low I used it to refill. Last night I noticed he cleaned up the corner one on his own last night and eating the alfalfa leaves off the floor is another big improvement. I used sore no more the first couple days and then switched to THE Thiamoxide which they no longer sell. I used it when I was bucked off against a pipe round pen and really messed my back up. The stuff smells horrible but works wonders. My horses have the worst timing!

I had a vet cause nerve damage to my horse after giving him the anesthetic in his neck.  Of course, it didn't manifest until that night, so when I called the vet about it, he said it didn't happen at his clinic.  It was awful.  I don't go there any more.  I could have accepted that he made a mistake, but I couldn't accept that he wouldn't take responsibility.  I thought he ruined my horse, but he did recover.
