Location: South Georgia | Saturday will be my first barrel race with my new mare. It is also my first time actually entering in 10 years or so. I have a choice between two different events. One is at an ourdoor arena and the other is at a big covered arena. For selfish reasons (heat), I am leaning toward the covered arena, but for my horse's sake, I'm feeling like she'd be more comfy in the outdoor. Thoughts? Am I overthinking this? I will likely just do a couple exhibition runs.

I think you're over thinking it. Ideally, your mare will need to learn to handle new arenas and keep her cool. I would take her where ever you want to go, and ride her like it's any other place. If you're nervous about her at any given arena, you're going to relay that to her and make things worse. Since you're not entering, now is the time to take her different places and expose her to different things. |

This ^ It doesn't matter where you go, because eventually you will be going everywhere you want to anyway. She has to get used to it, so I agree, go wherever you want to go. |

Location: Texas | I totally get where you (horsegirl) are coming from...so, go where you will be most relaxed. That translates into a good experience for both you and your horse. Build your confidence, then go somewhere more challenging. |

Location: South Georgia | Thanks guys. It is Saturday. Both arenas are just about the same distance of travel, give or take a few minutes. I think I'll go to the indoor. I wont know many people in either place, so its a toss up. I'll let you know. It's just so darn hot here, I'm going for the covered arena. Plus, there are many barrel races at the other outdoor arena in upcoming months. The covered arena doesn't have very many. |
