I have a 3 yr old filly that's wanting to work at home and has a really nice handle, but is just super flight/spooky. The sound of diesel trucks and tractors scare her. If she realizes she's by herself, she gets antsy and has tried to run off in a way. She will pull back in/at the trailer at the point she feels tension on the lead rope. Its almost to the point Im hesitant to haul her anywhere because I dont want her to get in a storm. Anyways... I thought about trying MVP Gastro Plex or Calmex, but am not sure which route to go. I think some of it is just being young and not having seen the world (which would point me towards the Calmex), but you can tell some of it is her nature. Now, I dont know if she has ulcers that could be causing some of this. Ive never had one with ulcers to know the symptoms/signs.... But that makes me question of the Gastro Plex might be the better option. Your thoughts??

I would treat for ulcers, omeprazole for 30 days and put her on Gastroplex.

Gastroplex is for ulcer prevention and Calmex is for calming. I have hauled a LOTTTTTT of young ones over the years and my vet always tells me 1cc ACE as soon as you get to the race ( Tongue, IM, IV) and leave them alone for an HOUR. SHe says it just makes them feel like they are at home.

Does Gastro Plex "cure" ulcers they may have, or just prevent?

GastroPlex does not cure ulcers. Only Omeprazole can shut down acid production so that ulcers can heal.

I agree. Nobody wants to "drug" their horse, but a little Ace takes the nerves away and they learn there's nothing to be afraid of.
I know of a well known Tb trainer who trains all his horses using Ace.

Oxy-Gen has a great product called Relax that is available in both a daily pellet form, or pre-race/pre-haul etc paste.  There's also Oxy-Zen that can be used in place of Ace and just takes the edge off.  I have a spooky, spooky man who's now 27 and has spooked at his own shadow since he was a baby and just a bit of Zen in a stressful situation - or when the field workers are wearing big hats, or when the combine works the field next to his pen, or when the garbage can is in the wrong place, lol etc.... works great.

Then Im assuming you gradually wean them off the Ace? Or at what point do you quit giving it?

YEP... and you don't have to spend hundreds of bucks on trying all these pastes and other things and see if they work. Animals are reactive. If they get a little ace when they are young at a show then they " Learn" a barrel race is nice and relaxing. You may only need to use it a very short time. Talk to your vet of course BUT 1cc for first time, then see how it goes, try a half and see if they stay nice at the races. Once you get to 1/4cc that really is nothing and you can try stopping it..

This is JUST MY OPINION, but I looked up oxy zen and it carries a $120 price tag for a 5 dose tube. I copied the ingredients from their website below. I do not see any ingredients in the formula that would justify a 120.00 price tag. I have also wondered why Oxygen products do not carry NASC certification?

Ingredients:
Vitamin E Supplement, Magnesium Oxide, Sugars, Salt, Soybean Oil, Xanthan Gum, Guar Gum, Wheat Germ Oil, Dried Active Yeast, L-Arginine, Thiamine Mononitrate, Niacin Supplement, Riboflavin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine, Folic Acid, Flavorings.

But this is just my opinion... I am in no way diminishing the product, just listing factual information from their own website and giving my opinion.

This is just informational for the other oxygen product " Relax".

Ingredients:
Grain Products, Plant Protein Products, Forage Products, Roughage Products, L-Tryptophan, Brewers Dried Yeast, Wheat Germ Meal, Vitamin E Supplement, L-Lysine, L-Arginine, DL-Arginine, Yeast Extract.

I would like to know what " Grain Products" " Plant protein Products" and " Roughage products " are???? I am referencing Winwillows post on another thread where he specifically listed those terms as being commonly found in NON FIXED formulas.

Once again, MY OWN opinion here and I am in no way taking away from the successful use of these products. THey seem to be very popular!

I get it – believe me!  On the Zen, there are some ingredients that are connected to proprietary formulas/blends that are just not going to be shared.  The great thing about Oxy is they will do FANTASTIC sales – for example the 3 tubes of Oxy Zen for $150.00 is a suuuuper popular sale and customers watch for that and stock up.  That’s also why Oxy does samples of the Zen so you can try it first since before you buy since every product can react differently with every horse.  What works for one, might not work for anther.  Oxy also offers the cheaper alternatives such as Relax or Focus.

In regards to NASC – Oxy-Gen just became approved last month!  Yeah!  The pelleted formulas have gone through the process and once the pastes have all been approved the logo will start appearing on the products.
