Location: NeverLand | with all of this crazy tornado weather, Anyone on here have storm shelters for their horses? I know your not supposed to lock them in the barn, but what about a storm shelter for horses maybe like a cargo shipping container underground with vents or a solid concert building .. Would It be something to invest in if its even a thing? or is it just plan silly to think of.. |

Location: Oregon | I ALWAYS wonder about this for those of you that live in tornado areas!! I worry about you AND your horses so much during those times. I would totally build something for mine if I lived in a tornado area for sure!

I ALWAYS wonder about this for those of you that live in tornado areas!! I worry about you AND your horses so much during those times. I would totally build something for mine if I lived in a tornado area for sure!
I just had my first tornado warning experience last night. we just moved to Arkansas from Utah so it was a whole new experience for me. Had me really worried and anxious all night for my horses  |

Location: North Dakota | Years ago when I was a young teenager My dad would let my horse come from the pasture into our backyard. My dad loved to sit in his chair and listen to the radio and drink beer while my horse stood next to him. My horse would eat grass around the pool and try to get my dads beer. He came in the house one day and said take your horse back to the pasture a severe thunder storm warning was issued on the radio. I took her back, her pasture was about 50 yards from our house. By the time I got her to the pasture the weather hit with really bad rain and wind. I just held on to her and waited it out at the barn. The weather got so bad a small tornado touched down and ripped a tree out of our neighbors yard. We had barely any warning before it hit so I can't imagine trying to put multiple horses in a shelter in time. I guess you would have to put them in the shelter every time a storm was scheduled to hit. |

I love this for hurricane season. I looked at something like this online before and it was pricey! For tornadoes, I'd imagine you would have to have a run-in style shelter where they wouldn't have to be "put up". Now, if money were no object, I'd love to have a whole barn built like this. But, I know I can't afford that. |

That's very true.. like I said we just moved here so I am not familiar with how this whole tornado stuff works. All I know is last night we had about a 20 minute warning time before the storm hit. now if we have a little bit of time to get them caught (10 horses) and put in in the short window before the storm hits, then it would be beneficial I would think. but I guess the weather can change so fast you never know.. |

Yes here in AR sometimes it's just literally seconds to go from looks a little rough to Lord have mercy that's a tornado I'm seeing coming. I worry about ours, but they have access to the barn, pond levees, or lower area around the barn. Along with tree lines for wind breaks. I figure God gave them the sense to know where to go during certain weather. Did I mention I still worry tho???

Location: Arkansas | Not long ago there was an article in QT Horse News about storm shelters at some of the elite stallion stations in TX. It was very interesting. Cinder blocks and a/c. . . . Told how they kept the studs separated while in them and how they did like tornado drills occasionally to practice getting them in there as quickly as possible. |

Underground would be BEST but this is essentially a concrete box (in the pictures shown). That's a pretty solid structure. The only issue I see is the door being ripped off and a horse sucked out.  |
