Location: SW North Dakota | How many of you are going to JH Nationals in TN?
First, Momma brag. My daughter qualified in poles on a horse that was born on our place. My sister had her for several years and hauled her in the barrels and started her on poles. When my daughter got her, she was "running" about 25-26 seconds. Ell has done the finishing and seasoning on the poles, and after a nail biting state finals, she was reserve state champ (tipped a pole, then missed one for a NT in the second go and no average points GAHHHHHHH).
Now, I didn't have the heart to tell her we weren't going, so we are making the 25 hour trek to TN with a horse that's never been out of the northern climate. Other than fans, ice in the bedding, baths/misting, does anyone have tips on how to help ease the stress of heat and humidity when you don't have time to weather them?
She is very fit, and Ell is conditioning her to get her in the best shape of her life. The mare gets 4cc of Lasix about 3 hours out. We always give her electrolytes, and gradually get her back to full water. She eats and drinks well on the road, but I will probably buy a hose filter for the trip. She's on grass/alfalfa hay and clean oats with renew gold. The mare has been on AE detox and Product X since my sister had her, too...
Our LQ has a stock in the back, so we will load the first 6' with hay, and she'll have an 8x10 open stall to herself during the trip. I have double thick EquiFlex flooring, so the trip should be comfortable for her.
What things am I missing?
Thanks in advance!! We aren't rookies, but its always good to have input! |

| Tigger with BioStar has a supplement for horses in extreme heat. I will probably start feeding this soon to my gelding who excessively sweats every summer. You might message BioStar about this and see if the supplement would be something to use.
Wanted to add you might check out Equi-sure, now under a different name, one of the uses for it is for when you know excessive heat is in the near future. I think it is called Zesstra, now?

| LOL, thanks for asking the question, I had forgotten that was one of its uses and for the price I will try that before I add yet another expensive supplement to his feed. |

Isn't that the truth?! I've gotten away from supplements completely, but my daughter has faithfully kept this mare on AE. I hate the thought of adding more- I worry they'll contradict each other at some point! |

Location: Missouri | Congrats! Since you are already using Animal Element Products take several tubes of In the Zone. The main issue will be heat and humidity in TN. the ITZ will keep them drinking. I think Last year they had an issue with not having enough electric to run all the fans, BUT I am sure they have corrected that problem. I would bring 2 fans to hang in stalls as well. Other than that just make sure he stays fit!
We will pray that it will be an odd year and the humidity will be low! |

Location: Do I hear Banjos? | I compete mostly in distance now...but when we haul we always pre-hydrate. We start giving them a soupy mash of beet pulp or a bucket of water with a cup of rice bran meal in it starting a day or two before we haul. They slurp it down and with the rice bran water they really get several gallons into them. We offer it to them at rest stops on the way as well. The idea being to keep them well hydrated throughout the long haul so that they don't arrive already depleted. |
