After thinking on it for a year now, I've decided that I'm going to breed my 1D/2D barrel mare while I'm off at college. She won't be getting rode, and so I figure if I'm going to breed her that would be the best time.
However, I have a few questions. I've heard once you breed your mare, they are never the same. (They don't have the same personality as they once had.) Any truth to this??? She gives me her all 110% of the time, and she is by far the best mare I've ever had in my barn. After college I would want to get her back into shape and hopefully running what she is now again.

Also, I am in search of stallion recommendations. I need to start saving and looking, and I don't know where to start!
She is full RUN!!!

I have her half brother (the sire) and his dam is out of Dun It With A Twist, and he has the best handle on him and is also a huge 1D / 2D barrel horse, so I was thinking about possibly breeding her to Dun It With A Twist to get something a little like him. However, there is so many out on the market right now. Which ones do you like?? (I already have more than enough speed with her!)

(This is her pedigree) Thank you!!

Pics? And budget

Dun It With A Twist could be a good way to go if you like her brother.
Based on the info provided, FG, FWF, or cowhorse breeding

What do you want to improve? Snappier turns on the pattern? More bone for conformation? Good luck though!

I love love the cow in a running horse.  Makes them nice...level headed, snappy turns.

Yes, I would love to get better turns and bigger boned. She's small, so would like to get something with a bit more height.

Budget just depends on how much I can save, although I would like to not exced $3500.

My number one pick based on what I know would be Fiestas Gotta Gun-big boned, awesome pedigree, has some height (15.2, which is big compared to my 13.3-14.3 cowhorses!), and should be snappy with the Playgun.

I also like PG Dry Fire and Hired Gun for Playguns, but am not sure on height. Not sure on height but a really cool reined cowhorse is Shady Lil Starlight! He's is pretty snappy and has some bone! Good luck!!

Dun It With A Twist would be a great choice, since you have one that you like! Or go with a Sun Frost, FG, FWF or Play Gun. Here are a few I like:

Firewater Fiesta
Hired Gun
Frenchmans Bogie
PC Frenchmans Hayday (I think he $3k, but that might have changed)
Dun It With a Whiz (he has a few 1d colts)

Also, I ran a mare after she had a foal with no issues. Obviously it took more conditioning and that type of thing, but she still ran and ended up clocking the same! I would say she was less marish after her baby (which was nice).
I have a few friends that have bred their mares and they all came back strong as well.

To answer your question, I wouldn't put any thought into the "she won't ever be the same after" comment.

Fiestas Gotta Gun - they also place him in many stallion auctions, so you may be able to save a few dollars if you keep your eyes out for those next winter/spring.

As far as your mare not being the same, I haven't had an issue with one coming back.

I will just make a suggestion on who NOT to breed to. FRENCH TO FAME. Going on the basis that the shipment that my vet got had absolutely NOTHING in it. No dead swimmers-NOTHING and the fact they blame my mare, me, and my vet I think he is sterile and they are trying to cover something up.

This is someone else's thread. You would do better and get a better response on this if you start your own and label it with the stallion's name. In terms of will he make a good barrel stallion, mmmm nmmmmmmmot sure. I don't know of any personally. You might pull an equistat report on him and see if he has any offspring that have done anything. He certainly is nice looking and nicely bred for the track. That doesn't always translate to barrels.

I only know 2 Fiestas Gotta Gun and honestly, I wouldnt own either one. Both were very heavy built, especially heavy in the front end and were really trashy movers. Pounded the ground. Could be the only 2 I personally know are the only 2 on the planet like that but.................
If you have a cross your riding that you really like, then that may be a viable option. PG Dry Fire by Playgun has sired quite a few very impressive barrel horses and multiple American Qualifiers. Check out his facebook page. Lots of video's and pictures and info. The very best #1 sireing son of Frenchmans Guy is Frenchmans Fabulous. We have a 3 yr old filly by him and she is a super nice filly!! Not real big, but nice and she has a tremendous mind on her.We have a 2 yr old by Firewaterontherocks and he has alot of bone and is a very big colt. He's out of the same dam as our Frenchmans Fabulous filly. He is a bit on the hotter side and watchier then the F.F. filly. We have a yearling by A Dash Ta Streak out of the same dam as the other 2. THIS colt is by far the most impressive of the 3 even though all 3 are super nice. This colt is just super cool. He's absolutely beautiful!! A ton of bone, he's going to be big. I think he's going to be bigger then the Firewaterontherocks colt even. He's just a classy classy dude that is very sweepy and just absolutely floats across the ground and everything with this colt is super eay. He was just born broke! Everything with him has been super easy and even if it's the first time for something it's like he's done it a million times and everything with him is just okey dokey with him. We are so impressed with this colt we bred our Frenchmans Guy daughter to A Dash Ta Streak as well this year. She's a super nice mare that is the dam of 2 embryo's by Tres Sies, so no we wouldnt waste her on a slouch. You can go to fultons website and look at their sale catalog to see more of his foals. They are all trully impressively made. The dam to the above mentioned foals we bred to French Streakin Jess this year. Excited for that foal. He to is by A Streak Of Fling and is out of Frenchmans Guy's full sister. He was a tremendous performer before being injured winning premier futurities, slot race winner and arena record setter. I believe he's going to be a heck of a sire! He's being promoted right, he's in the right hands and he's bred some super mares this year. Chance to get in on the ground floor.

Firewater Finale is an excellent choice. I'm not sure how tall FF is but my colt is 4 yrs old and 15.2. Bone like you can't believe and great feet. I have been riding the dickens out of him ranching this past month and he is just perfect. Every day ready to go again. No nonsense and can travel all day in the roughest country. I'm just in love with him. He is cowy and FAST! FF is also eligible for just about everything and those babies have some serious value. I could have sold my colt 20 times over for $5k+ from weaning to a yearling. $1000 stud fee

If you like Frenchmans Guy sons I really love Guys Piece Ofthe Pie. He is still running and winning the 1D. Fut/Maturity money earner. I have personally had 4 on the ground but he keeps giving me fillies and I prefer to ride colts. I rode the stud himself and there was nothing like him. He is smart, willing and FAST. They are catty in a whole new way. Nugget is 15.3+ HUGE bone and all black feet. His babies have been people lovers from the start and I have halter broke some out of some ranchy wolfy mares. They just ate up the attention unlike their wild dams. He is eligible for Future Fortunes, 5 State and VGBRA. Sire of 1D and Fut money earners and stands for $1000.
