Location: Northern Ontario | My mare who is usually an easy keeper is starting to lose weight. She is still shiny and full of energy. Right now she is on free choice hay and 2 lbs of oats, .5lbs of a high protein 25% and fat 15% supplement. Any tips? I don't want.to feed her a bigger quantity (since I cant feed her more than once a day)but I.might have to change what I feed. |

Location: Ohio girl moved to PA | could be a number of things. quality of hay could be down, stress, ulcers, teeth? dewormed lately? why only getting fed once a day? once you rule out health, you could try adding DAC bloom or oil. |

| You can swap out part of the oats for fat. Rice bran, renew gold, or a high octane horse food like ultium or horsemans elite by bluebonnet. Like humans, weight in horses is a by product of calorie consumption.
Edit: When's the last time her teeth were done? Does she have a way to stay cool during the day? Heat will melt weight off them.

Location: Northern Ontario | She maintains really well usually, but the flys are out and pretty bad this year. Thats the reason for her weight loss, but I dont want her thinner even if it is just.for a.month. Her teeth were done this week. |

If she usually maintains on the current diet and you have been happy with it until now, I would give her a few weeks to see if she starts looking better now that her teeth have been done. That can make a huge difference once she can comfortably chew the roughage part of her diet. This translates into much more complete digestion in the hind gut. |
