Location: Sunny California | I finally got my pad built for a barn and am leaning toward a mare motel. I used to have a shedrow barn and hated it. Where I live it is pretty hot for 5 months of the year and we have fairly mild winters. We don't get a lot of rain, but when we do I don't want my stalls wet. Do the stalls stay pretty dry in a mare motel? I've posted a picture of what I'm thinking of going with. Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Location: Oklahoma | In San Diego I had mine in a mare motel. Stalls were 12x24. 12x12 was covered. I put 8x8 across the bottom at the overhang and put shavings inside. I also put a bottom board up to hold the shavings in. Mine stayed dry in the rainy weather. |

I love the idea of the wood rail running along the bottom to keep shavings up where they're most needed. Very Nice Set Up! |

I miss it!!! I rehabbed a horse for the property owners and rode her 5 days a week while the daughter was off at college. She was a multiple world champion western pleasure mare. They have a barn on the other side of the property. Instead of them paying me per ride, I kept my horses there. I did all my own care and provided everything. It worked out great at the time. We made all the improvements to the stalls. |

Isn't it refreshing to know there are good people left in this world? What a great trade off! |

she got the better part of the deal... They went on vacation for 2 weeks and I took care of everything... she would pull the wet shavings out of the stall and spread them on the concrete to dry and then reuse them. Also picked up little pieces of poop with rubber gloves. Each horse had a day time and a night time stall. It was a little much

| We basically have that. The difference would be the barn is only open on 1 side - but I'm in Iowa so we do need the wind block in the winter. Our runs are probably 14x30-35' with gates at the end that open into our dry lot. The first 20' of run is under roof. We can run 2 horses per run easily if we need to. |

Ditto, those are nice.
My last barn was kind of a mare motel and the ends were cinderblocks halfway up. Nothing ever got wet with that "half" a wall.
I like how in that mare motel they have one section blocked off so they can eat in peace. My current stall situation has that. If it gets super hot I'd consider adding misters and a spot for a fan. You don't have to use them but they lower the temp SO much when you do need to use them. |

Off topic but had to ask... Is that a cone on that horse's leg? LOL |

He was a 2 year old in that picture and yes, his foot was stuck in the cone. All three of those horses came from the board buddie Smashedonpepper aka Sunny C Ranch. That colt didn't flip out, just stood there while I grabbed scissors and cut it enough to get it off his hoof. The buckskin is my stallion that I just bought back (Duncan). I put the wood between them as the colt would try and bug Duncan. The big blazed faced palomino was a filly - also 2 in these pictures. |

Location: Oakdale, CA | I'm in Oakdale, ca and have a 6 12 x 24 stalls...... fully covered mare motel. Ive had it for 10 ish years and I love it. I have auto matic waters, misters and corner feeders. This last winter it did get wet everywhere from the wind and rain. The horses were fine though and if we have a crazy winter again I might put up something to block the wind and rain. I would't change a thing about it. I did put it on a built up nice pad and I have sand in all my stalls too. I don't have any pictures but I could get some if you wants... |

I love your set up, its so much better then having a barn, with our heat this would be the ideal set up. I dont like barns, the risk of a barn fire is just not worth it for me. My horses all have their own pens with a cover so they can get out of the north wind during winter. |

Location: Desert Land | So far we just have the cover up, it's 40' x 80'. I am ordering the panels today - just trying to figure out how I want to do the stalls. I have changed my layout 10 times as I am having a failure to commit, LOL. It has taken me like 6 years to even get this far. I bought a used MD barn and 3 mare motels and sold them because I kept changing my mind. The sheeting is from the 3rd mare motel I bought but I had the posts and trusses manufactured because the ones that came with the mare motel were not as heavy duty.
I *think* I am going to do (6) 16' x 20' stalls and then I am leaving the last 20' x 40' section open to put a palpation chute, a little hay storage, tie rail, etc.
