Location: Central Texas | My mare is a lazy sweet little thing. With this heat, she just doesn't want to run for me. She has started running a half to full second slower so I brought her to the vet and she flexed and scoped 100% sound and happy. My vet did recommend giving her "Rodeo Build Up" before I haul to a 3 day race next weekend. She said it should help her push a little harder. Has anyone heard of this? I can't seem to find anything about it online. Also she mentioned Winstrol. What would y'all recommend for extra pep in her step? She's on a 14-6 pellet, alfalfa and grass hay, RedCell, electrolytes, and gets AirPower and Oxy-Boost plus before runs. Thanks! |

Location: on the fine line between insanity and geniusness | Do the build up over winstrol. It has less side effects. Winstrol can change their personality, they get HUGE... but some become fire breathing dragons too. I had a gelding that we gave winstrol- he ran and fired harder, but became terrible to deal with. |

| What 14-6 pellet? I've never used the build up, but I wonder if adding something like clean oats would put a pep in her if the pellet is low sugar/low starch? We just stopped feeding oats and went to Ultium (long story). They werent dragons on oats, but I have noticed since we've run out that they've been quieter. My little guy is still firing good, but if I felt I needed more pep I'd put him back on a bit of oats first probably. |

| I had a gelding that I used to feed Equinesaver, by Figuerola Labs, to. He got the regular daily dosage typically, but I would feed him the recommended performance dosage prior to runs. It made a huge difference. He went from being laid back to amped. It didn't make him stupid but gave him plenty of fire. Something else that you might want to consider. When running in the heat, I usually keep my warm-ups brief and then spend the bulk of my time walking prior to runs. Just seems to help them stay more comfortable and conserve energy. |

| Would like to see people quit "upping" their horses to run. If they don't have it to give, then don't try to manufacture it. And I find it wrong for a vet to recommend giving winstrol for performance enhancement....

Do power lifters take pre-workout because they don't want to lift as much as they can? Or do they take it to give them an extra boost of energy to work harder, more easily? |

Are power lifters humans and have a choice to what they put into their bodies? Sorry but I will never agree with performance enhancing drugs, especially steroids. The use of performance enhancing drugs in the barrel horse industry is really getting out of hand. |

If that is your arguement, you can't really support any part of our industry. I highly doubt horses are born WANTING to be barrel horses?! Or do I feel like they consciously choose to be a part of any sporting event?! It's not a matter of trying to manufacture heart or try that a horse is lacking, but a matter of keeping them feeling their best. Do I condone the use of steroids? Not so much. Is it my place to judge what someone else does? Absolutely not. |

When people have to stop giving their horses pain injections, muscle relaxers, and ace just to get their horses in the alley, you can talk to me about how adding some energy to my horse is wrong. If you think what I'm doing isn't okay, God I'd hate to see what you would think if you ever set foot in thoroughbred/qh racing facility.
I honestly had no idea these were steroids. Which is why I asked because I didn't want to just give my horse something I knew nothing about. I will be buying a bag of oats today and see if that brings her back to life. I don't need her scary crazy, would just like her pep back. |

| I was always told by family and AWESOME vets, horses can only go as fast as they are genetically and physically able. There is no drug or concoction that is going to make Sally 4D horse into a 1D NFR capable animal. Also, no steroid or drug will be able to create TRY/Heart. If a horse does NOT want to run barrels, they won't. THats why the great ones are so great!!!! |

| Find out what the rodeo build up is, it may be a concoction of B complex vitamins, which could give him a little more pep. |

To MeepMeep: Do I use steroids? No. But I do use Vitamins to make my horse feel great. Call it an "upper" if you will. Just like I drink a Spark before every run (B12 drink) , he eats a few vitamin B12 cookies. Does it make him crazy? Absolutely not. But I see no reason why giving a horse a little pep via vitamins before a run is a bad thing, especially when I know it doesn't harm him at all. Sure, some people use performance enhancing drugs in barrel racing for the wrong reasons. But putting all of us under one big umbrella and telling us we don't have our horses best interest at heart when using "Uppers" is what we are really upset with.

Did I say anything about vitamins? Why are you so defensive if you aren't using steroids? I just don't see the argument here? My problem is with steroids, as in Winstrol, and anything of the like. "Drug" used to enhance performance. I didn't say anything about nutrition, vitamins, and therapeutic treatments that actually BENEFIT the horse, not just it's performance.

Steroids are wrong for performance enhancement. That is my point. You aren't giving steroids, so why would I think what you are doing at this point is wrong? Are you planning on giving Winstrol? Doesn't sound like it. I think your vet is wrong for even mentioning it for the purpose of giving your horse more fire. |

Drugs can make a horse work beyond their bodies capabilities. They break down because they push themselves further than they can handle, they get injured, their hearts give out. It does happen. No, you can't make a 4D horse that has no capabilities of becoming a 1D horse into a 1D/NFR horse. But you can make a solid mediocre horse push itself mentally and physically to the point that it starts winning. Problem is they won't last very long.
