Hey all!

So I am in the process of selling my gelding, he is currently sale pending. I have owned him since he was a baby, and have put a lot of time and money into him. Trained him myself, and finally sent him off to be seasoned a couple months ago with the intent to sell. I have had a lot of changes in my life recently (Moving to a new state, School, internship, getting married etc.) and I am tired of training horses(I have never bought a finished horse, always trained my own) and I just want to enjoy. I want a horse that I can run when I want to, enjoy and go on trail rides too!

Since my main horse passed away in 2014 I have not really ran a barrel pattern. I have cruised them, loped them, but not RAN them. My old man was my #1 man for 6 years and I got real comfortable with running him.So now I feel like I'm back to square one. Once my horse sells, I know it will take some time to find me a new horse but until then, I am considering doing lessons. I have done barrel lessons occasionally when I needed help with training or needed something specific. But now I am not sure if it will help me with my confidence level. Anybody have experience with this?

I was in your situation a year ago. Sold my 4yo after a couple months with the trainer and immediately started searching for a more finished horse. I needed a major confidence boost after having a pretty bad bucker and knew I needed something SAFE and SANE but FUN. I also hadn't RAN a pattern in a couple years since retiring my old guy. I was super picky in my horse search but really glad I was. I went every weekend looking at horses and rode probably 20 before finding my current mare. Lessons were fine but I was still nervous jumping on new horses so the trying of different horses helped me a lot in knowing exactly what I need. My mare couldn't fit me any better. She was wonderful with babying me for a few months so that I could get back into the game and has really stepped up with me as I have gotten more confident! They are harder to find and worth their weight in gold, but they are out there!

In finding a horse, I would suggest finding one that has been trained properly and is just as happy going slow as running all out. I have a 5 year old that lives at the trainer. She runs top of the 1D with over 500 entries yet will do a nice cruise through when I ride her. I will never be able to run 1D times on her. More like 4D for me. My trainer trained the horse in my avatar and he would be 1D for her but is happy running in the 4 D for me. Find a trainer who brings their horses along slowly and correctly that has horses for sale.

On the confidence building, find a clinic that offers a lot of saddle time and runs at various speeds. It took me two clinics before I got my confidence back. I do think a horse you feel comfortable and secure on is important.

Thank you for your replies.

Just got word that my trainer got a check for my gelding, and she is now waiting for it to clear. I am a bit sad in knowing someone has bought him, as I have put a good five years of my life into him. But I know he is not what I need right now in this part of my life. I'm going to miss him though, he taught me so much!

WinningPaints, I am kind of on the same boat! I got bucked off a few years ago and broke my lower back in the lombard area, so since then I have been just super cautious. Then when my man man passed away, I feel like I have just been wandering trying to overcome my anxiety with not being hurt like that again.

I guess I would need a babysitter like horse! Streakin, I will have to do that. I just moved to Boise, ID area and I am not too familiar with any of the trainers in the area so it is a bit mind boggling. I believe I will be searching in the nearby states as I am rather familiar with trainers in Nevada and Utah.
