Not horsey related, but somewhat. I'm looking to start my career. I posted a little while ago about making a move, etc and am ready to do it. I got a good job offer recently, but it's not in the area that I would like. Point being though that I've learned finally where my niche is and what type of job I'm marketable in and would like to start applying to these jobs again. Lucky for me, they're in every state. So where have you lived that you love?
I prefer:

-the east coast
-very "ag-gy" as that's what my field is in
-very rural but a hop, skip, and a jump to a neat city
-obviously horse country or barrel racing not extremely far
-I like some history/culture
-I'm a wino and like live music person so things like that are nice hence why I want to be close-ish to a city
-not top priority by any means, but it would be nice to have choices when it comes to a good farm boy to sweep me off my feet in the future! Lol.

Any suggestions? Or just places you've liked in general?

I love WV and but moved across the river to Ohio to buy a farm. Both are Beautiful states, the mountains of WV are uncomparable though. I do have to say Ohio is has a LOT of agriculture and farm land, also has some good barrel races. My daughter does HS rodeo but my best friend is very involved in the IBRA and they are always running somewhere in the state. I have been to some nice barrel racing facilities from one end of the state to the other. I feel the cost of living is reasonable also.

It sounds like you are describing Iowa! It's one of the most agricultural states out there, but still has lots of neat cities, and you're never more than 10-15 min from a town to get your groceries. Big rodeo state, joackpots everywhere. It's not on the east coast, and the weather sometimes sucks. But, goodluck with wherever you decide to move!

Can't help with the East coast...but I LOVED Southern California! I was in the Acton/Agua Dulce area, which is about an hour from Pasadena. This particular area has some agriculture, mostly vineyards and hay fields. Tons of barrel racing events all year round with very good competition.

Anywhere in the central belt is good....

Thank you for the suggestions! I prefer the east coast so I can stay somewhat closer to family as they all live here. Something that may sound dumb, but is a concern for me is my extreme anxiety over tornadoes. I've had tornado nightmares as long as I can remember so I'd also prefer not to live anywhere where they are too common But keep the suggestions coming!

Eastern NC is nice.  North of Wilmington would probably be a nice fit for you.  It's alot of ag and close enough to a big city.  Lots of barrel races, and then there's the beach.

I can't wait to move home.

Dallas has lots of tornadoes too. Forgot to mention that DallS has cultural events and museums comparable to anywhere in the US

I live north of New Orleans. I was going to suggest the Folsom / Covington area until I got to the last part, lol. I find the guys here... well, yuk.

Good luck, and keep us posted on where you end up so I can live vicariously through you, lol. You are at such an exciting point in your life.

Im in Northeast Ohio and we have so many options for barrel races and rodeo circuits and futurity shows around here. Im about half way between Cleveland, and columbus and Pittsburgh isnt too far off either. Lots of rural areas. I love it but i hate the winters. I just hate being cold altogether lol  I used to live in Kings Mountain, NC and it just wasnt big on barrel racing. I loved that i was 3 hours from the beach but coming from ohio to NC the horse scene just wasnt what i wanted. I love being able to go to a local jackpot during the week or hit up a big $$$ barrel race on the weekends!  Im also not far from Genevea on the Lake which is a Wine lovers dream with live bands everynight. I cant help with the farm boy, he found me lol

LOL. Well, I guess my favorite place I lived is totally out of the question. I LOVED living in Benjamin, Texas. Way out in the middle of nowhere, about 100 miles from Abilene, around 150 to Amarillo and Oklahoma City, around 90 to Wichita Falls. It's a haul to anything, much less barrel races, and if you aren't into the authentic, old school cowboy ranch culture, it's not the place for you. And the men, uh well, you might be out of luck on that one.
I know, totally off base and not even in the same ballpark, but I just had to open my big mouth and put in my two cents worth.
NC and Ohio sound like a good bet for you, and GOOD LUCK! Let us know. I always like to hear about people finding their place and being in a good place figuratively and literally.

Thanks everyone! I'm kind of leaning towards North Carolina and Virginia, but I'm definitely looking at all the areas you guys suggested! And obviously I have to get a job where it's open. I'm really hoping I can get one soon, but will take my time to make sure the job's right. I'm excited for a change! I'll keep you guys updated but keep the suggestions coming

I am totally a west of the Mississippi kind of girl but… If I were to move east it would absolutely be to North Carolina! Lots of agriculture and horse related events. There's lots of farm ground as well as high mountains. I love that state! It is beautiful.

Hey everyone! So here's an update. Although I do have some good prospects, I also have another opportunity I am highly considering..First let me say that I believe I am marketable as an Extension agent with my degrees, background, and work experience. BUT I also have the opportunity to manage a 300 head beef cattle operation in south central Virginia. The pay isn't the most, but considering what I'll be given (farm house, cell, company truck, land to have a horse) I can actually save more! I personally feel that this option may be a better one right now because although I have lived on a beef farm during childhood and showed cattle, I would love to learn all aspects of running a farm myself. I think that I would be accepted by and more knowledgeable to farmers as an Extension Agent in the future if I could say that I've done and lived it. I have gotten job offers and interviews in Extension, but I would honestly feel more comfortable growing my knowledge more and gaining experience in so many realms of running something like this. Not only would I be managing cattle but the farm needs TONS of organization, spreadsheets, inventory done, cattle software utilized, a nutrient management plan, a Facebook page/website to sell grass fed beef, corn chopped for silage, hay made, $60k worth of NRCS grant money utilized, etc etc etc. I'm thinking I may go with this option for personal and professional growth. Am I crazy?

Sounds like a good plan, nothing compares to hands on experience.  The fact that the farm needs a lot of work is a real opportunity  to shine.  Document all the progress to show future job opportunities.
