I recently purchased a 5 yr old pc frenchmans hayday gelding. He is very lazy is this typical for this bloodline. He is out of the mares trade lady eight. I know they dont all have the same personality but I would think there are some common traits. Also I find him to be stubborn I think because he is lazy. He is a super quiet gelding which I like but not a lot of pep. Just curious to know others with this bloodline and what their personality is like.

I don't have one myself, but Stingray sure doesn't seem lazy!

My friend rode a few colts and said they're a tad on the lazy side. I think they perk up once they get a job.

He's not bred like that but I have a gelding that's lazy and stubborn but he comes alive when it's time to run.

In my experience anything sun frost can be on the lazy side depending on what they are crossed with, I don't think its true laziness though, just that they are "energy conservers"... they'll give you effort when they think they need to.

I have a 4 year old with Sun Frost on her papers.  "Conserving energy" is definitely what she does too......
She can move if she is asked to, but prefers to put it "in park" and take a nap.

i had a Sunfrost Wonder gelding out of a Streakin Six bred mare. I loved that little guy, BUT he was lazy. I had to wear spurs from day one and constantly had to ride with my legs. He had a nice barrel pattern but man was he a ratey/turney little dude. He was as gentle as they come, esp for a colt.

They are STUBBORN, energy conservationists. I have two and love them to pieces. When it really counts and you need them to "wake up", they will try their hearts out for you.

I would agree with this. I have a sunfrost/driftwood 3 year old. Quiet as can be but lazy and she really prefers if I tell her vocally to trot vs squeeze. She ignores me at first but if I say the word trot she moves right out LOL. She is a tad lazy but she also wants a job. When I was working on some ground stuff (flexion, moving off pressure), she was very very annoyed with me.

I have never had a Hayday but have been breeding Sun Frost horses for a long time and as others have said---can be a tad laid back till they have a job. Then the switch goes off---still not hot by any means but heading into make a run they will come alive.

Thanks for all of the responses. I have only had this gelding 2 months and never had a sun frost bred horse so wasnt sure what to expect. I just know sun frost offspring are outstanding performers. This makes me feel better that laziness is typical for sun frost bred horses. Thanks again.

Did you find that your sun frost horses were slow to develop? Mine is 5 like I mentioned and he is gangly and lacks topline. He has yet to bulk up. I am going to start him on forco and nutrena empower balancer.

Really---I think this can go horse to horse. I have had some that developed early and did well in the futurity game and others that were slower to mature. My Sun Frost son actually grew clear into his 6 year old year.

I have a son of Sun Frost and he is very laid back.  However, I would never consider him lazy.  He doesn't get hot but has more motor than I know what to do with most of the time.  I was roping a pen of fresh cattle last week and he was the only of 4 heel horses I was using that didn't get stupid in the box after running that many hard and fast.  I wish most of my other horses had a mind like his to complete a task then relax, rather than GO GO GO.

All I can tell you is I owned and trained Trade Lady Eight. She was a beautiful mare with a super good attitude . She was quiet, but not lazy, just a really nice individual.

Bred the way your gelding is ... there is no reason for him to be lazy ..
unless he has a big motor and has been taught to never go fast ..

Take him out with other horses and trail or pasture ride and just
have fun racing, galloping, loping trotting, jumping logs, and
resting. This will be easier with several horses .. he will
follow the other horses ..

As he learns he can run in the pasture .. use the cues to speed up
you are going to use in the barrel pen and how to slow down ..

I have a 6 yr old daughter...and while she can be lazy at home, she has one heck of a motor when we get to a show.  She is absolutely a free runner and loves it.  I think they just need a job.
As for filling out...don't have that issue with mine.  She's a short tank.  Baby got back to say the least..
Personally I love my daughter of Dinero and would absolutely consider another one if I was shopping.

I had a son of Dinero out of Coxes Major Streak who was the dam of Sherry Cervi's NFR mount Tinman. He was a very sweet colt, but VERY laid back. I actually wish I hadn't sold him - he was so easy and even at 4 yo had the right temperment to be a kids horse.
