I am not very knowledgeable about ovarian cysts (equine). I know that my mare has one on the right ovary that is fairly large; and my vet recommended giving a shot to see if it helped her at all. 2 weeks later, she is still swishing her tail and bunny hopping in the back end at the lope. Also can be very nervous and fractious minded at times.

What other ways are there to treat this? Regumate? Remove the ovary? Is there a way to treat the cyst or remove it? Can the cyst create the bunny hopping? Or should I look into another lameness exam (Side note, I have had a lameness exam done, no lameness in the hind end during the flex tests).?

It's been a while since I've dealt with this.

But yes, my mare had a serious attitude problem, got super cinchy and did not travel right, like your bunny hopping. She was a nightmare. Obviously, for good reason. It hurt. I would think that if the cyst is large enough, they'd recommend removal which is done under general anesthesia and then follow up with some hormone therapy such as Regumate. I would doubt at this point that it'd "go away with time".

I don't think it will go away with time either. At this point I *think* she needs it removed. Once its removed, does she need regumate? She can be cinchy/ agressive toward the other mares. Sounds like our shot didn't help

Just removing it may solve your problem. You won't know if she needs the regumate until you see how she responds after the surgery. It also depends on how much of that attitude/cinchiness you want to put up with. You could try some herbal alternatives like Mare Magic, etc...

She isn't terrible now. I'm more concerned about her working comfortably, bunny hops aren't good for either of us. And she hasn't been positive for hocks and stifles in a lameness exam.. So I am really hoping removing it would solve it for her. My vet just wanted to try the shot verses going straight to surgery.

Are we talking n actual cyst or retained follicle(s)? I have had to spay two mares due to retained follicles after trying everything under the sun to prevent the problem. Yes it can cause the bunny hopping, kicking, laying on panels, colic like symptoms and other signs of pain. The first mare got to where she would slam into the wall or panels when trying to stop because she could NOT get underneath herself, kicked her shoes off in the trailer, leaned on walls and panels, kicked her hocks sore in the trailer... the second mare turned in to the most unathletic piece of crap I have ever sat on...it got so that I could trot her and tell you what side she was ovulating on and how big the "cyst" (retained follicles and ovary) were. The first mare's would get to the size of a grapefruit or larger when it should have ben the size of a walnut.

Hopefully you will have better luck than I since I tried hormone implants, Regumate double dose Regumate, herbs, acupuncture, marble, and various course of hormone shots. What worked the best was my vet would give her a shot to cause ovulation which would at least soften the follicles then comes back a few days later and massage any remaining follicles off by palpation. However, the cycle would repeat and we would have to do this every 3 weeks. Spaying solved the issue and was the best thing I could od for either mare's comfort and performance.
