Location: Aggieland | I tried to search for related threads and couldn't find anything... Whats everyones suggestion on a hack that has a little more oomph? Im trying to find something that I can grab and really get one to snap around the first. I don't really need much rate either as my one mare is already very ratey.

| I'm curious about what you are looking for. I think of oomph being more woah, but you say your mare is ratey. Are you looking for something with more turn? Something that allows you to handle her more? What is your mares turning style? is she bendy or stiff? What are your hands like? It takes a certain syle of hands to do well with a hack - more bump and less hang. There are so many hacks out there, a little more info would help narrow it down. Videos would help too.
I have several hacks in my trailer. Two sizes of Stivers (rope and chain nose), a ladybug, a wildchild knock off, a beetle, 2 sizes of the jim warner, little S, flower, and a Clampett that virtually every horse on the place rides good in. Stiver's and Clampett's are my favorites. |

Which Ed have you tried? They are on my wish list.

I've ridden in hack before and I really like they way my hands get along with them. She's a very bendy horse and requires little rate. I guess I'm just looking for something that I can handle her more. She tends to take a couple steps past the first barrel I just need something that I can grab her and snap her around the first because after that she does the rest on her own. I've tried the jim warner but it wasn't my favorite. Im not really educated in hack so i guess I'm just trying to find out which ones do what. I was thinking maybe a wildchild? |

Given what you said - Id say either the medium Stivers or the wildchild. Both can get ahold of one if you have to. So can the ladybug, but might be a little much. I really like my short shank clampett, but it might not be enough. He does make longer shanks, so I wouldn't rule it out either. |

| I know a lot of people like the stop & turns up here. https://www.horse.com/item/western-ss-stop-n-turn-bit/WBA21/
I personally don't like hacks, I own the beetle and the S hack just for trail riding or when kiddos ride but they aren't much for oomph. |

Location: Phoenix | If you don't like the Jim Warner, try the Carl hack from L&W bits. The website shows a steel nose but you can get the rope nose option which is what I have. To me, it's a cross between a Little S and the JW. It's more of a sidepull but has whoa and bend if you need it. It's the only Hackamore I feel like I need in my collection. |

Just adding my experience for reference to others but this one felt more like a halter than any other hack I've tried. There's definitely a reason they say to use this on seasoned and finished horses rather than younger horses needing help. |

Yes, your horse does need to be well broke to ride in it. I wouldn't be putting a horse that doesn't know how to use themselves in it because that may not work. I use it on a horse that rates hard and gets very close to the barrel because it stays out his way but if I need him to move over or pick up on his shoulder I can do that. |
