Ok guys I need help!! Im having a horrible time with the first barrel and Im 99% sure its all me......... He is a push style horse and I have problems pushing him all the way to the first. Its like I totaly blank out going to the first I couldn't tell you anything that happened on my first barrel but after I get past that I can talk myself thru the rest of the pattern. If I could focus on the first like I do my second & third I don't think I would have as much trouble. Any ideas or tricks any one has to help me? I have a couple videos from the past 2 weekends I will try to upload. Thanks In advance!!!

It sounds like you're hitting it going into it. Pick a spot on the fence and drive to it, two-handed. Dont drop your outside hand until you see the barrel at your hip. Do some counter arching drills as well! You can find some really awesome drills on trainingbarrelhorses.com.

The first barrel is the toughest - for us and the horse. It's the only barrel that's ever in a different spot - which is why its the money barrel.

Fences change too, so I prefer at home to use cones set up at my "spot", burn the location of that cone into my mind. Similarly my horse learns his "spot" and runs to it. Therefore you both come in looking for "the spot". Don't look at the barrel, one has never jumped out of the way and changed positions, focus on your spot.

Is he cowing up on the barrel? what kind of speed drills are you doing with him? A video would be super helpful.

If he is hitting it leaving it then you need to do slow work and get him to take that extra step on the back side. Trot/lope circles around the barrel and keep his feet moving. You need to free him up. If he tries to set and turn pick him up and keep him moving around the barrel. Don't let him finish until you ask him. You may also need to adjust your approach to the first.

Then you need to push him one step MORE into the turn before you allow him to actually turn.

I also had this problem on my yellow horse, and in poles as well on him. I find that because he has SUCH efficient barrels and pole weaves, it makes up for the lack of speed he has(still a 2D horse and 21 sec poles but no way one of the fastest in a straight line).
I found that if I held him up till the end of the chute, we would nail out first turn every time. It was more so a mental thing for me. If I started running from the back 40 or beg. of the chute, I would think to myself "wow it feels like we've been running for a really long time! I should start to rate!" even though we were still 30 ft off of our rate spot...

Hope this make sense!!!

I had the same exact problem as you this time last year...Rollback style, hit leaving it. I figured out if I bring him in really close entering the turn then I have more room leaving the barrel (opposed to coming in too far out and then running the barrel over leaving). I ride him two handed all the way around the first barrel, the rest I go one handed now. Lastly, I make him take one extra step on the backside, NOT towards the fence but like you're headed back towards the in-gate per see (if that makes sense). After these changes, I went from hitting the first every run to not hitting it in months. Hope some, or all, of this helps you too!

They cow the barrel. Slow up and you pump your body. Trying to get the horse to.the turn. That's to many signals. They lock on the barrel. If you can't remember the run. Your holding your breath. It only.takes a short time everything turns to a fog. Break the lock and teach yourself to breath.

Appreciation of the turn itself. Both of you. The horse locks on takes ground away from the turn. Slow up and take away position. You get anxious look in at the barrel. Lock pegs on front end. Gets you out of position. You brace up and the horse braces up. Anxious for you that telegraph to the horse. Your anxiety cause him anxious at the turn. Then you hold your breath. In anxious situation most people do.You have to breath. Now both you get stiff
