He's a 15yo registered QH gelding. Places in the 2D or bottom of the 1D locally. Automatic on barrels, and is a finished pole horse. Has been to various rodeos, etc. Good for vet, farrier, etc.
I am not sure if he requires any maintenance. They are asking $7,500.

Thoughts?

If hes your style I say go for it. Are you going to have him vetted?

Just have a thorough Prepurchase exam done and have them pull blood and hold it in case you need to check for drugs in his system after you get him home. That was recommended to me by a vet when I had a prepurchase exam done. I didn't need to have it checked thankfully.

I haven't decided if I will have him vetted or not..thoughts? You don't think price is too high for being 15yo?

The girl who owns him is local, and my MIL knows her some.

I used to let age scare me. Not anymore. If he is, what they say he is and what YOU need. Go for it. If you take care of him, he has MANY more years left.

But, I would get him vetted for sure.

Age shouldn't matter in this case. He's $7500. If he's as all around as they claim he's a bargain in my opinion. 15y/o means he's passed all the nonsense and just ready to work. If you take care of him he should give you another 10 years. Once he's 20 you can sell him as a step up horse to a younger tween and easily get your money back if he will take care of them.

ETA ALWAYS GET A PREPURCHSASE EXAM! ESPECIALLY FROM A "FRIEND"

His age doesn't scare me, but I don't care if I know the person who is selling the horse well or not, I am getting a vet check. There could be things brewing that the owner knows nothing about, or there maybe nothing at all going on but at least you would know for sure.

This^^^ Age is no big deal unless hes over 20, but see what can of care he needs if any is needed. Have you tryed him out yet? Go ride him and see how he acts with you and if you really like him take him to your vet and have them go over him and see if theres any problems. Sounds like he might be a good one.

No, haven't tried him yet. We are trying to sell our Harley to help pay for him if we like him!
I won't try him on barrels, since I'm new, but my hubby will as he's experienced in barrels.

Sounds like a deal to me if he passes vet check.   I would expect maybe hocks or maintenance may be required but that would not stop me if I liked him.

Agree, I bought a gelding from my very good friend's daughter, they bred and raised him, I still did a prepurchase.  I had films taken so I would have a baseline to know down the road if there were any changes.

It sounds to me that you are a novice and are looking for a good sound, sensible horse to learn on....This horse (by your description) fits the bill and that being said, would be worth the price. To me, age is only a factor IF the horse has lameness problems. However, for that price, a pre-purchase exam is a MUST DO !

I think that is a fair price for a horse that requires minimal-reasonable maintenance for his age. I would definitely vet check, including x-rays.

UPDATE:

Have been chatting with the current owner, and I'm going to go try the horse on the 20th. I think they are going on vacation next week. She said he's super automatic in barrels in poles, level headed, no maintenance. Is on a joint supplement because her friends sells them. She also has two other horses for sale too, so I can try the others. She's asking $7,500, but I told her that my budget is around $5k. She said if I really like him, we could work something out. She said she has no time to ride anymore with, and just wants to see him go to a good home. She lives only 30 min from me.
I've been looking at "dealer places" for something..but I guess if I had to pick, I would personally rather have something that can teach me, and help me learn, versus something that I need to train. Since I'm very new to barrels and western, he sounds like a schoolmaster type.

Hopefully it all works out!

If he is what she says, he is exactly what you need.  The older horses who teach us are priceless.  For comparison, I am looking at a 12 hand pony, 14 years old, gentle, go any speed and knows events-priced at 4K for my grandson.   I won't hesitate to pay that to get him a great safe first horse.

I agree! She sent me a bunch of videos, and he seems to be really level headed! I'm trying to not get my hopes up TOO much, but he sounds like a good fit for me.

be careful waiting too long --- last one we wanted to try, the seller said they were going to be out of pocket over the weekend and said we could come try the horse the next weekend...called to set up a time the following week and it was already sold???

there are probably quite a few people on here (me included) that would jump at a chance to go try a horse like you are describing (especially from a seller who sounds willing to deal

I hope she doesn't sell him before I go look at him! She said her and her family were going away, that's why she picked the 20th. I'm assuming she and her husband are getting out of horses. She said his roping/barrel mare is also for sale, as well as another one.

She said she is "extremely negotiable" to the right home and she asked me what my budget was as I told her I couldn't afford $7,500. That's when she said she could work with $5k.

I was pretty heartbroken when I sold my Hanoverian gelding years ago, so I sold EVERYTHING that I worked to hard for..so I have to start over which is fine, just costs $$. My DH said he would buy my a barrel saddle, so I'm thankful for that! All I have now is a hoof pick, grooming bag, curry comb, and a mane and tail brush, lol! I know, pathetic. I used to have so much.
