I know some of you have been following my ups and downs with this horse. Here is the latest
I dropped him off at CSU for his myelogram Sunday. Monday they put him under and found he didn't have any compression. That was a shocker for sure based on some of his symptoms. Then he had a mild impaction colic that night, most likely due to the anesthesia. They were able to get him comfortable and he passed it fine. This is only the 2nd incident in all the horses we have insured that was well worth it. I was able to allow the vets there to run several different diagnostics on him as well as blood tests etc. From scoping his throat (all his symptoms appeared after a dental float) to blood tests and the myelogram itself. Everything appeared normal. He shows lumbar soreness and was very positive on a right hock flexion test. So strangely enough, the horse I thought was quite a sissy to pain, appears to have made his entire body sore from a hock that most likely needs injections and we imagine he has been working through the pain for some time. Our plan from here is to have his hocks checked out and give him 6 months of turn out and see what he is in the spring. He did have some neck trauma, and injured his neck muscles during the dental float or even perhaps on the ride home in the trailer. That one is a mystery to us all. It has taken 3 months for him to be able to reach down to his pasterns but with stretching etc they were able to get him to eat off the ground and are positive he can graze in pasture during his turn out. I will have a chiro/massage work on him before his winter break, something I wanted to do earlier but we wanted to wait and make sure he didn't have more serious issues that could be made worse. Thanks to everyone that has cried along with me on this stressful journey of a horse I very much love. Maybe we are meant to win big someday

I am literally crying reading this. So glad you had good news!! I know your heart was breaking over the initial diagnosis. Can't wait to see you back to work with him (and now I'm scared to get our horses' teeth done!).

I hear ya!! The strange part is everything was text book with the teeth other than he wouldn't put his head down enough to rest on her shoulder. He's aweful big and she was hesitant to give him more drugs being how he was standing for the float so well. He did have hooks in the back and after it was all over we worried perhaps nerves were damaged back there, but it was unlikely. The scope proved she did nothing wrong. I walked him until he was wide awake and loaded him for the 50 mile trip home. Never felt anything in the trailer on the way and his halter and lead knots were loose when I untied him so we never susupected he fell down in the trailer etc. Just a very strange thing and I am sure very uncommon.

I sure hope. Going to look into his hocks more and some chiro work and let him be a horse for 6 months to hopefully fully heal the neck muscles and let his body feel better.

No doubt you are right, and it was just a freak thing, but I'm one of those that worry about even the most remote possibility (then usually it's something simple that bites me in the butt!).

Heck, a good chiro, some massage, and you two will be back to the top! Those tough ones makes us work for it trying to keep them feeling good. So nice to see happy endings!!

I re-read that and made it sound like the vet thought she caused nerve damage lol, but what I meant was after we all (all vets involved as well) saw the horse at first with the really stiff neck and some swelling on the side thought maybe there was a chance nerves were bumbed bruised etc during the float while getting those hooks. They were all trying to find a reason for his issues. But after the scope, everything looked perfect. So it is something he did to the muscles and we hope time will heal them.

Not knowing he's your horse when I saw this  title, my heart skips a beat when I see that name.  My childhood hero......Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier of World War II.

.........and a great name for a horse.

He has his fair share of tack and blankets with that name. Sadly most people have no idea who it is.
