| My 3 year old is running hard enough and turning hard enough that I feel he is ready for front shoes. He has nice solid feet but its time. Are there any suggestions for shoes for a horse that has never been shod before?? Never had one like this, they had all been shod prior to me owning them. Is there anything they need to get used to? |

Location: Claremore, OK | Keep it simple. I've always just put a rim shoe on front and kegs behind. Some I don't shoe behind.
If they're getting shod behind I want to slow work them and let them acclimate for at least a week or so before I make a run. |

What do you mean when you say "it's time" for shoes?
If the horse can handle it, I love keeping them barefoot.
With that said, my choice of shoe is a basic rim shoe for barrel racing.

That's my thought as my good horse has actually thrived more since we pulled his shoes almost a year ago now.
However I would agree, start with a basic rim and adjust from there. |

I agree. I hate shoes unless they need them. If he is running that well at 3, I'd let off the throttle a bit and let em grow some more. Sounds like you are off to a great start. |

| He has grown a whole new foot since I've had him , no chips or anything but still gets tender footed on gravel or rocks. I have an outstanding farrier and we have always left the sole on trims and he has nice big feet. I have used rickens etc. but he still gets tender. |

Finding anyone to hot shoe in my area is pretty much a no go. I had one, and as good as he was his ego was more than I could tolerate. I now have a very dependable, conscientious, perfectionist cold shoeing my horses. He will be with me until one of us retires!! |
