I'm trying not to count my chickens before they hatch....but it is likely I'll be owning a youngster very soon. I have never owned one quite this young before so I have some learning to do!! (I will post pics once everything is set in stone! EEK!)

Per his current owner and vet, he will be on a daily wormer until he is a yearling. Birth date was May 7. He will be on mostly grass/some alfalfa hay 24/7 once he gets to me.

What do you feed one this young? What else should I expect or is it not much different than say a 2 year old? Would you blanket during the winter?  He will be messed with and loved everyday. I just want to be prepared if this fella is meant to be!
Any and ALL advice would be greatly appreciated!

Free choice hay, any pasture or large area to move around. A buddy if you have one to teach him manners etc. Grain/supplement meant for his age, but not in large amounts. Would prefer one to grow naturally on hay any day than be "fed up."  No blanket, they are designed to keep themselves warm-if you have a shelter.

You will be WAY ahead to buy a started 2yo, there is so much risk in buying weanlings and yearlings. Turn out 24/7, a buddy to help teach manners, do not over feed and hope/pray that they do not get hurt or sick. Be prepared to accept them for what/who they are in their conformation, temperament and athletic ability. If you want a horse with specific traits/abilities, do not buy a baby.

Personally, I would not and do not feed a daily dewormer.

Yes, we breed, raise and train but I still would advise against buying a weanling unless you have no specific expectations and are willing to work with what you have.

Thank you. He will be out with my 10 yr gelding who will hopefully teach him to be a perfect gentleman like he is! I was considering alfalfa cubes & oats as his "feed" with a vitamin/mineral supplement . How do I know how much to give him? Dont want him to grow too quickly but he does need some TLC. There isnt much to choose from so I was thinking the Equipride or Purnina 12;12 supplement. Salt and mineral blocks available at all times as well.

I'm not a fan of cubes but haven't really fed them myself either. Just known others that did and they never fed enough. Whatever you feed for roughage, make it a good quality and all he can eat! I like Ultium Growth made by Purina. I wouldn't do more than a couple lbs a day and 12:12 is a good mineral. Just leave it out there for him to eat as needed with some salt.
