| I've used the same farrier for almost 20 years so I don't know what others' customary fees are for resetting a thrown shoe. My farrier used to come reset for free but then he started charging $25 and recently he has tacked on a trip charge that put his fee at $50. I think that's a bit steep. What does your farriers charge? |

Thats a bit steep I think, how offten is he having to reset a pulled shoe? And far is he having to travel? I would think since you have been useing him for the 20 years, there would be just a small charge like 15 to 20 dollars..My farrier dont charge me nothing to reset a shoe, but I've been useing him for years and he lives up the road from me. |

| Mine does not change anything whether I have the shoe or not but I always give him 20 or 30 dollars. I used his dad for 15 years til he passed away. His son is a good farrier too and always takes care of me so I try to take care of him. |

Yep I like trying to give him something, but he wont take money for resetting a shoe since he lives up the road, but we kinda trade out when he and the family go out of town for a roping I go make sure all is good with the horses and dog..So always helping each other out. |

He makes me wait until he's in my area again, which can be a few days, so he isn't making any special trips. My horse hasn't thrown a shoe in over a year until a couple weeks ago. You could have knocked me over with a feather when he said $50 when I asked him how much. |

If your horse is sound and happy I hope you tip him well! He is not making much of a living at that price.
?To the OP, $50 is a little steep if he made you wait til he was in the area. |

Wow is all I can say since he made you wait untill he was back in your area in a few days after the shoe was pulled and there was no special trip made for you, 50 is alot to replace a shoe, heck I pay 50 for a all around trim.. I can see paying him 20 bucks to tack back on a shoe but 50 not so much, what does he charge for a full set? |

| $100 for a full set.
$0 to put a shoe back on if it comes off in the first month, but I do have to wait for him to travel back up in my direction.
If you are happy with him and he does good work, then I wouldn't think twice about contributing a few extra $$$. |

Location: Montana | If the shoe is thrown within 6 weeks, there is no charge to reset it. But my farrier does a good job and maybe I'm just lucky, but (knock on wood) I've not had to have him come reset a shoe in the years I've been using him! I pay $90 for a full set of shoes. |

| Based on replies, I have a new question--How often does your farrier come out? Mine insists on every five weeks and refuses to change that schedule or come one a different day/time if I have a scheduling conflict. He charges $165 for a full set of regular steel shoes and $15 for a trim. I have one with shoes and two retirees that get trims so that's $195 every 5 weeks! |

Nada!! Warranty work!
This - and if another shoer tacks a shoe on that was thrown on a horse he didn't show, around here it was common for them to not charge to help each other out also. |

If i were you, i'd be looking for a new farrier. I pay $90 for a full set and $75 for half. andd my farrier comes when the horses need him to. NOT on his time. If my horses need done in 4 weeks he'll come at 4, if they dont need done untill 9 weeks, thats when he'll be there. Im not charged a travel fee or if my horses pull a shoe. I will absolutly pay him for tacking back on when hes come out of his way, (when he lets me). Thats crazy how he treats you. Surprised he has any business that way. Every horse grows at a different pace. |

Location: Mi | My farrier travels to me from 2 hours away and I'm the only one in my area he does. That being said, yes I do pay him alittle more then alot of farriers around, but my shoes stay on, he's good, and hes reliable! IF I lose a shoe he will put on back on without charging me doesn't matter if I have the shoe or not. IF I lose a shoe he will be to me the same day (might be 11p if he's busy that day but he's there) if I need to have it put back on for the next day. |

Location: Do I hear Banjos? | It almost sounds like he is either so busy he can afford to lose a client...or maybe he is trying to lose this particular client? Are your horse's difficult to handle? Charging more than I've heard of and being so in-flexible about scheduling...Just seems like he doesn't really need you as a client. I'd find someone who appreciated my business. |
