My friend Sally and I were going to meet another friend for dinner at Outback; I was guiding her through a shortcut from Aubrey to the steakhouse. We were on a four-lane street in Denton coming up to where we needed to turn left. Sally asked me, "Do I need to be in the Right Lead to turn up ahead?" I would give anything if I'd been quick enough to say, "No, you can just switch when you get there" but I'm not witty like that. We were going to meet Karen Walls, who was one of the first, if not THE first, barrel racer to do well on a Flit Bar horse, Shadow Bar. Sally had a horse she called Tyler that she got from my mother- he was by Flit Bar and out of a really good Leo San Siemon mare. She ran barrels and break-away roped on him and they were a force to be reckoned with, back in the day.

It's funny how you can mix up horse lingo in the real world. Mother once told my new dentist that I "didn't shed my teeth" until later.

So, your turn. What equine malapropisms have you heard (or said)?

My sister had a grey pleasure horse in the 70's by Leo San Siemon, Leo Nug Siemon I think.  He was a 4-H National Champion.  Do you find that when you go to sit on a chair or stool that you always get on on the left side?  Funny stuff just sinks in.

How cool that your sister had him! That makes us almost kin. And yes, come to think of it, I DO get on stools from the left side. Always.

I've done that! I've also had that "uh-oh" out-of-body feeling when I've found myself talking to non-horsey co-workers about things like needle size and hitting a vein. . . suddenly I remember that not everyone has the same life experiences. . .

I referred to myself as "on broodmare status" the whole time I was pregnant. I have no nonhorse friends, thank goodness- that one might have been hard to explain!!

Never ask about half life's on drugs in front of an HR person or you might find yourself pulled for a random drug test the next day. The HR was talking about someone failing a drug test for too much codine even though she had a prescription. I asked what the half life was and could they have pulled the test at the peak instead of after it was lower as I didn't know how that worked for codine. You'd have thought I sprouted two heads with the way she looked at me.

I guess only druggies are suppose to know what half life's are.

I'm an only child, so all my life I was used to being pretty special shall we say, to my parents!! Well, when Chandler (he's an only too!) came along, everyone was smitten and I lost my status pretty quickly!! I told Momma (total non-horse person) all I was now was the broodmare that had produced the golden foal. . . . She didn't find it as amusing as I meant for it to be

Calling to let someone know you can't go somewhere and telling them that you are going to have to be a 'turn out' that day.

I've done the same!

My car also gets clucked at/kissed at and maybe a "whoa" when we're coming up too fast on a stop.

Took my little guy to his doctor for his 2 year old checkup. My daughter who's 14 came along. Dr asks, "Did you remember to get his birth certificate from the courthouse?". I looked at my daughter and asked "Did we get your brothers registration papers in the mail?", she say's "Yes Mom, they're in the pick up with the brand inspections". Look on the Dr's face was priceless :)
