| I'm in Pennsylvania working on a project and have been since the spring. I have went to several jackpots around the region, and there is one striking difference between running barrels anywhere else in the nation as compared to the north east region...the drag.
Y'all only drag every 8-15 horses. What's up with that? One jackpot in Ohio I attended ran 60 horses and didn't drag once. The norm seems to be every 12 horses, with the occasional drag 8.
I have seen, and done it myself, that the horse on the top of the ground win the race. Wouldn't that be enough to convince the population in general to drag every five?
I have also asked, casually, around the warm up pens why the people running don't demand a change? I have gotten everything from shrugs to defensiveness? I really really care about my horses legs and I just cannot understand not dragging every five?
I get the whole, "Well, at rodeos..." My answer there is that I'm not AT a rodeo, I'm at a jackpot. Jackpots ought to have better ground, hence the saying, "Trashy rodeo ground".
Would anyone like to weigh in? |

| I am in Illinois. You won't find a show around here that doesn't drag every 5, 7 or 10 based upon class entries. Most the time drags are stipulated by the sanctioning association; but if it's just open jackpot, even the ground crew is smart enough to drag every 7 or 10.
I cannot imagine running 60 horses and not dragging. WOW. |

| I've lived in NY for most of my life and every jackpot I've ever been to (including the ones PA I've attended) drag after 5 or 7. So its really not a "north east" thing per se.. |

Location: Ohio girl moved to PA | Im in ohio and when we go to big shows they drag every 5. When i go to my local asscoications shows, they pick a number (ex 6) they will run 6 then drag every 8,9,10, depending how many are in the class. Luckily we have really good ground at most the arena we run at so its never really a problem but i surely wouldnt but running if they did every 60!!! thats crazy!!! |

Location: Eastern OH but my heart is in WV | WOW! I would say it is more a show producer thing for the barrel race you attended in Ohio. We live and race in Ohio and that is NOT the normal. Usually around an average of 8 at most show I have attended. I don't think I would be going back to that show if they did not drag within 60 horses, that is crazy! We even drag every 8-10 for HS rodeo. |

| I'm in Minnesota - we drag every 5. If it's a small (50-70 horses) jackpot, sometimes we do 7-8 but mostly it is every 5. |

Right. I was shocked when the one I was at was only dragging every 12.
The rest of the world drags every 5... |

| It really just depends on the show. Small/fun shows in my area of PA won't typically drag even if there is over 20 in that class. Though typically they're lucky to get 20 in a class.
As for the people's responses, some people are always on the defense. I don't run at enough big places to vouch how they do things here. Hoping next year I can hit those and see what you're talking about :) |

| We drag every 5 regardless of how many are at a barrel race. At the beginning of another class we always drag as in after the open and youth is starting. After 50 we have a deep drag of the whole arena which we call a" big drag". Around here people often win by .001 second and no one would show up if we did not adhere to this. Classic has been to barrel races around here and when you get used to that kind of organization you just expect it.
I have seen pictures of barrel races on grass that were in the Northeast. I thought that was scary.

Location: The best kept secret in TX | The tiny town in Oklahoma I am from drug every 10-15 riders when we were at a "jackpot". Everyone there viewed it as "practice" with the chance of winning a little extra cash. I only ran a few times when I lived there.... |

| Kind of branching off of my own topic, but y'all from the northwestern states like Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, etc, I don't consider to be Yankees. :) |
