My fiances mare had a traumatic event that caused her to tie up, she also bowed a tendon and ripped all of the muscles in her hind end. We have taken the necessary steps of going to the vet once a week for check-ups, electro-shock therapy, cold hosing, and we even hired someone to take care of her because we had to work and wanted her to have everything she needed.

However, about 1 month after the incident she got severe muscle atrophy from her withers all the way to her tailbone and looked like she was 30 years old, with some babying, consulting a nutritionist, regular vet checks and anything else we could give her we regained everything back... or so we thought.
This was last November and we are still not using her to rodeo on (she's a heel horse) and we have now been told by a different vet that she has serious scarring, nerve damage and muscle atrophy in places we weren't made aware of by the other vets....

Has anyone ever had this and what did you do to get your horse back? She is literally the one in a million horse and putting her out to pasture or putting her down is not in our mindset at all.

what was the tramatic event? Did she tie up that bad to cause that or get in a fence? I know some things that help muscle atrophy but not sure on the nerve damage. I know when I thought my show horse might have compression in his neck from wobblers I put him in Vitamin E right away. Not sure if that made a bit of difference but when we went under to check for compression they didn't find any and he was cleared of wobblers.

She ran full out for longer than she should have through a field of knee deep snow.

When she was taken to the vet she had a super high heart rate and her enzyme levels were through the roof, but the problem is the nerves and muscles in her hind end are just not coming back.
We had her on the treadmill hoping it would help and i'm not sure it did anything.

was she scared? I have never heard of a horse that would do that, the whole self preservation thing. But not saying it couldn't happen. Strange and the first time I have heard about it. I wonder if you could get in touch with some track vets, as I think they would maybe be the closest to have ever dealt with what you are describing. How long did it take for the atrophy to happen?

Epm, pssm, wobblers are the first things that come to mind.
