What are some saddle brands that are made to free up the shoulders? I've heard that vernon purdy saddles are good..but hoping to not spend 3500. I have a big 17hh gelding with broad shoulders, but some muscle atrophy behind his shoulder blades. Riding him in a shiloh now but feel that it's too tight. He has had epm (has relapsed also. I pretty much need to treat him every so often) and has back soreness almost all the time, which of course affects his training.

Thanks, I've been considering a caldwell. Not sure if he'd need a rocket or ultra rocket!

From what I've heard, you can send Charon Caldwell pics of your horses back from different angles and she can tell you which size you'll likely need.

I have two Cactus Charmayne James(Scamper) saddles that free up the shoulder. I love the way they fit.

I want to see a current picture of your saddle on your horse without a pad and then go from there.

I will be odd man out probably but my gelding is built that way and the only saddle that we tried that I could actually afford was a Circle Y Tammy Fisher Wide fit.  Since switching to this saddle beginning of last year my gelding is like a totally differnet horse.

I'll join in if you're thinking about treeless, because a Just B natural was my choice after giving up on treed!

Thanks everyone! I've spoken with Charon at caldwell and will be sending her pics. She's thinking he'll need an ultra rocket

She was able to fit both of mine from pictures.  I love my Caldwell's but I had heard so much about the Roo's I had one made for my hard to fit horse and love it even more than my Caldwell's. I sold one Caldwell and am having another Roo made for my other gelding. They feel a little less bulky then the Caldwell's.

I think i would love the roohides but it would be hard to find one used that fits him. Might be easier to find a used caldwell.

The Jordan Peterson Contender and Finalst made by Shiloh Saddlery.  The bars at the front of the saddle are flared out for shoulder movement.

Mine isn't as tall as yours, so that may affect size, but I have a super mutton withered fat 13hh quarter horse mare, and I tried a Circle Y WIDE flex 2 saddle on her when she was down at youth world and it fit awesome! The wide was almost too big, and the regular fit great, which never happens with her!

Look at the thread that has a title something like if you read this you will be a horseman. Scroll down to the video of the white horse with bones drawn on it. Note where the shoulderblade is. A saddle would have to be placed half way up the horse's neck to interfere with the movement of the shoulder. The shoulder is much farther forward than most people think. This is an outstanding video and great artwork I might add

I know they can fit your horse from pictures and/or a mold. Also, I believe their Wrangler model (partially exposed swell and cantel) are usually under $3,500. Last I knew the Wrangler's were $3,250. I love mine! Really freed up my mare in the shoulders, I've had many people comment on that since getting it.

?All treeless saddles free up the shoulders A LOT!!!  I like the Just Be Natural Circle Y saddles for the way they sit and ride, but they are not the quality of the Bob Marshall's.
