What are some things you do in the arena to keep things fresh other than pattern work? Just looking for some ideas for a finished horse. I find myself going into the pen and doing the same thing everyday. I thought about just excersising.

trail ride, trail ride, trail ride! Do figure 8's around trees, do small jumps over logs down, standing on stumps and waiting. Anything you can do in the arena do it in the woods. It gets them thinking and having fun. Plus this is the best time to ride! NO BUGS! hahah

Most of my riding I do on the trails, and just focus on conditioning.

I get bored in the arena so that's why, haha. But if I don't do pattern work, then I'll work on reining maneuvars (flying lead changs, spins, circles, nice stops). Or maybe I'll do some low jumps and English work.  Or do random gaming patterns.

Because we have limited acres and the arena has the safest ground for him be loped/conditioned.

Its still getting into the 90s here. :) The bugs arent too terrible. Well, no more than they usually are. I thought about setting up a 4 barrel pattern also. Or a straights pattern. Or no pattern at all and just riding for conditioning purposes

Personally, I'd stay away from anything barrel related.   Try poles maybe, or some low jumps.  Set up a trail type class, tarps, get an old mailbox to hang on the fence, a bridge, put a sliced tarp under a tree to ride through, or pool noodles.  Build a bridge, practice backing through and around barrels or poles.  Get an old rope and drag things around.

So what other events do they whole at this arena? Do they rope, team pen, cut? I would find different places to haul too to let this horse have something else to think about besides staying in a arena.

Reining patterns, set up cones in a million different ways and randomly turn them, cavelettis, take the bridle off and see if you can walk trot lope figure 8's. I have a finished horse that his feet are an issue so sometimes trail riding isn't the best answer unless I can count on the ground not being a rockfest. Somewhere I also have a book with a ton of different patterns and or skills to work on and I use that to fill in when my brain is at a loss.

Do you have somewhere that you can swim him?? Love swimming finished horses =] Not sure if you're looking for strictly riding...but you can also maybe do clinton anderson type stuff? And maybe trick training? I always teach new tricks when I'm bored with mine. They can now smile, lay down, beg and hug haha

Its my arena at home. On days the guys rope I haze and track steers, bring steers up. We travel to other arenas a couple times during the week and I am able to switch it up when we do so. This particular question was asked in reference to those evenings I am at home riding and no one else is around.

There is a pond I could have access to. I have never swam him. It looks like a lot of fun though!
