| My mare had her hocks injected last Wednesday. Just lowers. Yesterday she has some swelling In upper left hock joint unrelated to the injections. No heat not lame. Sent pics to vet and looks like it’s a bog spavin. Vet said to apply surpass couple times a day till Friday when I take her in for it to be checked. Surpass sucks!! Sticky sticky sticky. I can’t get Voltaren gel from Canada anymore so looking for non sticky options. Lol. Anyone ? |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | hmm not sure but I think I would be in a panic if I found any swelling so soon after an injection. But I am new to them. My son's horse has been getting them in his hocks. I check him daily for a good week in case of any issues with the injection area. |

I didn’t panic but first thing I did is call the vet to see if it was a reaction, flare, or possible infection. Vet assured me that if it was an infection or flare she would absolutely be lame / 3 legged. Which she is not !!! She seems fine other than the little bit of swelling. There is no heat etc. I have been doIng tons of research and it seems it’s pretty common. |

Location: Claremore, OK | Keep a close eye on it. Take her to the vet if she puffs up anymore. Just because the swelling is in the upper hock and you only had the lowers done it doesn't mean you're safe.
the cortisone will keep the pain and inflammation down for about 10 days. That vet hasn't been around many joint infections if he thinks they have to be three legged leg to have one. |

| After cold hosing this evening swelling was almost gone! Spoke to the vet again and all is good! Taking her in Friday for ultrasound. |

I have not heard of that happening. Typically it's associated wit the ankle, fetlock, flexor tendon sheath. But never say never. Could it just be fluid build up? Is it squishy or hard? |

Drain it and inject it and rest!
My vet told me last night that if she injured it ( As we suspect) then it may never go down to its old size just depends. But if it remains full its usually cosmetic. No issues and can remain a performance horse. |

Similar injury. Wind puff is the swelling collected in a pocket from an over use injury. Quick turns and quick stops. |

| Oh, and I did ask her about the Steroid in the injection masking the infection for 10 days etc.. SHe said the steroid may LESSEN the intensity of the pain, but in her 30 years of practicing, she has NEVER EVER seen a horse with a joint infection be SOUND. My mare is SOUND. It may keep them from being " 3 legged, non weight bearing" , but they will be " Significantly lame. Period. SO that made me feel better. She said its like getting a needle shoved under your nail and having an abcess. If you take tylenol it may " Help " But your going to FOR SURE feel it and react to the pain. |

I wouldn’t have said that, but I’ve had it happen two times in the last 12 years. Both times, vets telling me the horse would be dead crippled, when they weren’t . One of them was bad enough they had to surgically clean it because the push was too thick to come out a needle.

| It is a lump by the right front knee, knee not swelled, lump about the size of your thumb and squishy not hard. I have these magnetic ankle wraps and I put it over the lump and it goes down some in size but will return by feeding time. |

| I would like to know how your horses were travelling and what their joints looked like when they still had an infection but were not Lame etc???? Just for my own knowledge to keep in the back of my head. My vet has been a lameness vet for 30 years and has never done me wrong. lol I really really trust her and her opinions. I just would like to know if your horses did in fact have infections, and they were not lame, how did you know??? THanks! |

One wasn't lame even though he had a lot of swelling. The other horse stepped a little short bit I wouldn't call him lame. Both horses were confirmed with infections by joint fluid analysis. |

| Got home today and her swelling was about 80 percent gone. Will keep my Friday appointment to have her checked. |
