I am in Alberta and have a young stallion that I would like to futurity up here and in the states.

My question is what would be the best way to approach Futurity trainers in hopes that one would accept him?

I am also trying to match his style with someone that would click with him. He is an own son of PC Frenchmans Hayday out of a half sister to Stingray so I am guessing his style would be better suited for someone that can run turny smaller horses. He will be started in March and April by a cutter and then hauled for life experience.

Thank You for your time.

I would start off talking to Joleen Hales.....Streaking Ta Fame. She is very easy to talk to and I'm sure she would give you good advice.

I'd ask Liana Deweese for advice too. I'm pretty sure she doesn't futurity, but she'd give you good, solid advice.

I don't remember their names on here, but they are both on FB.

There are plenty other people that I would talk to, but that's probably where I would start. Jackie Jatzlau too.....she's got an injury right now from what I read on FB though.

Ryanne Pedone has done a fantastic job with Feel The Sting? (hope I got his name right). He is a young stud out of Stingray. She just won the open race on Sunday at the WPRA Finals on him with all the NFR girls there.

Jana Beam Brown lives in Texas but is married to a Canadian. She goes to futurities up north and in the South. Jordan Briggs is pretty tough but I do not know what futurities she travels to. Jolene Montgomery is successful and again I do not know what futurities she travels to.

I would make a decision fairly soon, whoever it may be. They may have a recommendation on who they would like to do the early work with the colt.

Personally I love Hallie Melvin's style. Just watch some of her videos. She rides correct, quiet and they go their spot consistently. Her horses seem to like their jobs and work for her every time.

Another very successful lady is Shali Lord. She's been to the NFR and qualified for the American, and I believe she's been doing futurities for the Spitzs' horses as well.

There are lots of great trainers out there. Be prepared to spend some $. Futurities and training aren't cheap! But you might start checking with people. Some want them as a 2 yr old and prefer to send them to a colt starer of their choice. One they know they ride behind well. They may not want them sent to a cutter first. The one I sent to futurity was like that. They took her as a 2 yr old never ridden. She had an injury and didn't make it to the futurities

My pick would be Hallie and Lee Hanssen. Hallie is a fabulous rider and they have a great program

Another question just out of curiosity. Do some trainers do better with stallions? Do some trainers not want to deal with them? Hope it’s ok I’m kind of hijacking your thread!

Like the above poster said, find someone that has been successful with stallions. Hallie Melvin Hanssen  would be my pick. She has won on numerous really nice stallions.

Janna Beam Brown.
She has trained and hauled several studs and was/is quite successful.
She has videos on YouTube.
She rides correct. Doesn't jerk em around the barrels.
They go in doing their job.
She's a good horsewoman.
And it shows in the results.
Good luck.

Not sure if Jennifer C. Epps-Sharp will run Canadian but she is familiar with stallions and done a fabulous job with Slick by Design! I haven't seen much she cant ride and does amazing with youngins. Plus her and her husband are good down to earth people! she's worth asking! She is from Montgomery Texas

Figure out your budget before approaching a trainer. If you go with an American trainer, you will have to budget for the exchange.

Also how old is the horse? Some of the futurities in the states run as 4 yr olds and derby as 5 yr olds, in Canada we can futurity either 4 or 5 yr old year but not both.

What year do you want him to futurity in? This may also factor in on what part of the US you will be sending him to and the trainer training him.

Is the horse CBHI, if so he needs to be standing in Canada for 3 or 6 months I believe, Chelsea Driedger (Nickster) had issues with this during his futurity year.

I suggest messaging Chelsea, as she could probably give you the good and the bad in regards to futuriting a Canadian stud, I cant remember who ran Nickster.

Thank you for all the input. I will do more research and see what we can come up with.
