WE ARE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE:

THE LEGENDARY STALLION "STRAWFLY SPECIAL" WILL BE RETURNING TO THE BREEDING WORLD OF QUARTERHORSE RACING THRU THE TECHNICAL MIRACLE OF ICSI.
For more information, call the InFoal, Inc office at 951-929-4533

Strawfly Special
Inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2017

Strawfly Special had something to prove.

Bred by Dan and Jolene Urschel of Texas, the bay stallion by Special Effort was one of four winners from six starters out of the winning Grade 1-placed Fly In The Pie. Strawfly Special was purchased as a yearling at the Ruidoso sale by Jack Hall, who raced him in the name of Hall’s Liston Aluminum Brick Co.

With 25 starts against the best horses running over three seasons, Strawfly Special earned $222,920 while compiling 11 wins, including one in a major stakes race; four seconds, with two in stakes; and three thirds, each in a stakes.

Returned to Los Alamitos, he won in allowance company in September 1991, ran in Apprehend’s Los Alamitos Invitational Championship (G1) in October and followed that with a close third to Apprehend and See Me Gone in the Quarter Horse Breeders Classic Championship Classic (G1).

Strawfly Special finally went into well-earned retirement after running in Refrigerator’s division of the Champion Prep Stakes.

Strawfly Special then was acquired by Jens List Jr. of California, who moved him to his Double Bar S Ranch at Moreno Valley, California. List died in November 1996, leaving the ranch in the hands of his widow, Sharon, and daughters Dawn and Rhonda. At Double Bar S, Strawfly Special proved his point as a sire, where he ranks in the top 10 by both earnings and winners on the track.

The sire of 1,448 named foals in 16 crops, the stallion is represented by 883 winners from 1,193 starters, including two-time world champion Tailor Fit, All American Futurity (G1) winner Streakin Flyer and Grade 1 winner and successful sire Strawflyin Buds, 76 other stakes winners and the earners of more than $25.8 million.

Strawfly Special is also in the top 10 as a broodmare sire, where he is represented by racehorses such as world champions Last To Fire and One Fabulous Eagle. Strawfly Special foals also did well in the show ring, where the stallion is represented by AQHA Supreme Champion Gotta Good Habit and other all-around performers.

Strawfly Special was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2017.

This is great news. As an owner of an identical twin to his most successful son (Tailor Fit), and the 14 3 year olds in training out of him, i can clearly see future benefits from accessing SS's genetics via ICSI. Excellent use of repro technology. We wish them the best of luck.

will someone please tell me what ICSI stands for?

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection - "Using ICSI, oocytes are injected with individual sperm from a donor stallion, and the resulting embryos are allowed to develop in the laboratory for approximately one week. Developed embryos are then shipped to a private embryo transfer facility for transfer to a recipient mare, as for standard embryo transfer"

Please share more. I'm guessing you have a clone to Taylor Fit.
Since they aren't eligible for registration in AQHA and one needs papers to race, what are the babies in training for?

Yes, Tailor Fit (proof of SS's ability as a sire). Horses are DNA verified same process as AQHA and registered in ADNAR. Daughter is driving program focusing on barrel horses, but working to build all around horses with elite speed. All colts getting solid education across disciplines and taking her time. She is blessed to have a lot of incredible mentors helping her along. Lexie Russell Performance Horses wearing the coffee cup brand. Great kid with big dreams. Back to Strawfly Special and the potential of utilizing his genes via ICSI!

I think Dr. Beck does a 1 chance shot for $2500. or a guaranteed 45 day pregnancy for $10K

Thing is not many runners have resulted from frozen like this....

percentages on runners from starters are not very good.

so you are saying just because of how the egg is fertilized it results in a non runner? I can't see how personally. It all ends the same. One sperm one egg and even though it is embryo, the race world has proven plenty of Champions can come from a surrogate mare.

Oh yeah surrogate mares yes ma'am. BUT frozen semen or ICSI not so much. You may find a few outliers that lighted up the board but the odds are not in the fav of them being runners so far. Also, these studs such as First Down Dash are being bred this way to the very best mares. Black type mares that produce a runner year after year then all of a sudden don't. The odds just aren't there for most race people to spend that money, there's already a stigma in the race world about it.

There are several cutting studs that are ICSI only now, I believe. And the babies keep coming and winning. . . .

Exactly...They say ICSI is only has about a 40% success rate on young healthy mares.
