Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | Everybody's favorite question!!! I need bit suggestions.
I'm a ring snaffle bit person. They fit my hands and everything I ride tends to like their brakes and rides in a ring snaffle or a modification of one. That said...I have a horse in that is a little lacking in the rate department... He's super quiet, he hasn't run by anything, but I feel like I need some whoa with speed. He's pretty broke, pretty soft, rides around great in a Carolina locked ring snaffle for dry work and slow work. I don't think a "big bit" will be right for him, as he gets a little afraid of his face--I think he had a young rider that got too heavy handed on him in his past--and will stiffen and pop up if you get on to him. I've tried a tender touch...not enough, and an old school Simplicity with a light chin chain. That is ok, just not quite right. He might come around to it. He has a stiffer turning style if that makes a difference.

I would try a Jim Warner Hack... Freedom since he won't run by but if you need a little rate and set, you got it. | |

My riding style fit a gag type bit, so I'm not sure if my suggestions would work for you or not, but my guy is sensitive to getting in trouble and someone being on his face. Only mouthpiece he doesn't seem to overreact to is a chain mouth. I have him in the start to finish combo bit, but looking to step him out of it. He is notorious for running off with people which is why I stepped him into the combo, but I'm confident that's due to over correcting his sensitive side. (I know that's slow work coming in to play too) I've been eyeing up the short shank carol goosetree double gag. I do like no hits, but I'd get the short shank in that as well. Maybe try a ported chain?
