Someone just posted about Coats - what type of back do they fit? I’ve eyes them for a couple of years but have never seen one in person. I have a filly with a somewhat flat back and most saddles I’ve tried have rolled on her. Currently, I have a Shiloh JP Contender that fits her, but I’m not in love with it myself.
What can you tell me about Coats? What do you like/dislike? How does seat size fit? What should I look for or avoid?

He has a tree called a Batie tree... it fits a flat backed horse... has flat bars. I just bought one and the quality is outstanding.... This is my first coats and I'm impressed.

I have a Coats saddle that fits my flat backed horse well. I only use one felt pad with it. I also use it on my normal withered horses but I put a wool pad and then the 3/4 inch felt pad. The Coats saddle fits my flat backed horse better than any other saddle that I have tried. This horse is not super wide, but you could set a dinner plate on his back, about where my butt sits on him.

I love the standard Coats tree -- very versatile and it fits those hard to fit horses that have very little wither -- plus the quality of leather on his saddles is amazing!

I have 3 Flex tree Coats and just got one with a Batie tree.  They all fit my horses great! I wish the swells were a litttle higher for my one barrelhorse.  They are the most comfortable to ride in, in my oppinion.

Larry stands behind his saddles, I would send him a picture of your horse's back and one from the side, then call him. He has been making my saddles since 2000 and I assure you if you have one made, he will get it right for your horse's fit. They hold their value and the workmanship is excellent. I have a wide flat backed horse, he made me three saddles for him, before we got that perfect fit and it is as close to perfect as you can get. Feel free to pm me if you like, I highly recommend Larry. If you are in Texas, you are welcome to try both of my saddles on your horse.

The one I bought is a Lazy L and I'm really impressed with the quality. leather is really soft and supple. I have a friend that first bought an original coats and then her second saddle bought a Lazy L. She likes her lazy l better and said that the leather and quality were the same.
