Location: SW MO | Hey all. I have a cheaper end horse for sale, and have provided all of the information/videos on earth to a girl who is wanting to put a deposit on the horse. With that said, she is wanting to meet halfway to pick up the horse. Which is 8 hours one way for me. I am just unsure, even with the deposit if I want to do this. How would you approach this? |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | So your saying that you going to let her take your horse on a deposit that she payed? That sure is a long ways to be going, did you already get the deposit are is she going to pay you when you meet up? I would be really leary about this. Theres just to many miles between you two, I would want all my money up front befor I drove all that ways, to make darn sure shes going to be there.

One was only 2 hours so I didn't charge anything. The other was 5hrs and I got gas money up front. Both had to pay cash and one rode the horse once we got there. |

| I'd make sure the horse was paid in full before getting in the truck.
I'd also charge something for the privilege. Hauling is NOT cheap for decent haulers, so it shouldn't be at your cost. Especially if the horse's price isn't high enough to cover any sort of hauling cost. (25-30k ++, yeah, I'd probably think about hauling!) 1500-5K---probably not!
A deposit doesn't equal a bought horse. Neither does a check. Driving that far needs a guarantee. |

Same here, not a chance. Get her to pay for the horse and then have her drive to get it are hire a hauler.. |

| Agree with the statements above...not a chance =/ Unless she will pay you in full, PLUS shipping costs for the horse. |

I would charge shipping, especially on a cheaper horse. I have paid $500 to have a horse delivered that was only 10 hrs away-one way. Time is money and with the risk of her not liking the horse etc and backing out, I'd tell her to come to your place or pay to ship it. I try to be very accommodating but horse people will take advantage and screw you over like no one else. |

Keep it simple ...
8 hours one way sez 700 mile round trip ... @ avg speed @ 40mph = 18 hours easy ...
means 700/12mpg x 2.50/gal diesel = $150 in gas for you ...
Brag on horse, say you have family commitments and need to remain close to
home and would love to meet her yah yah yah ..
Tell her to send a check $200 less than the agreed on price to help pay for her gas
and say she can pick up horse 10 days after you receive her check for the full amount.
Name the amount to be on the check ... if $2000.. tell her $1800 etc etc ..
This would also give her a very fresh heath certificate on the horse needed to cross
state lines. blah blah blah.. (because you would not get one until her arrival date
is confirmed)
GOOD LUCK ..

| Depends on how bad you want to sell the horse.
From a buyers point, if I was told nope the horse has to be paid in full, I would walk away. There are too many dishonest sellers there, not saying you are one, but if I was told I had to pay before I could see the horse, nope wouldn't happen.
16 hours one way for a buyer, I am pretty sure I can find horses or sellers willing to meet me closer.
So ultimately it comes down to how bad you want to sell the horse.
I have done half deposit, if they are a no show, I keep it. If they show up and the horse doesn't meet their standards or they believe I misrepresented the horse, I give the deposit back.
I stand behind what I sell, I don't want the horse bouncing from home to home so I would rather take a hit financially then selling a horse the people weren't happy with |

Location: sunny california | 8 hours one way is basically two days plus a room unless you have LQ trailer. I would charge 250 per day plus fuel. this would not be refundable under any circumstances, and paid before leaving. depending on the price of horse I may elect to apply it toward the price of the horse. |

| I did this once with the understanding it was a done deal. Buyer had seen numerous videos and committed to buying the horse, and I agreed to haul halfway.
Got there, unloaded horse. She tacked the poor thing up and rode up and down the side of a busy, busy highway for an hour in the dark. Horse was perfect. Then she said, "I'm just not really sure. He's everything you said, but I need to think about it some more." And left. I did not drive 5 hours for the horse to be tried, that would have happened at my house. In hindsight I should have stopped her from tacking him up, but I didn't.
NEVER, EVER, EVER AGAIN. Horse and fuel paid in full and written understanding that the purchase is final, hauling is separate. |
